Introducing A T-Shirt Celebrating The Washington ‘Football Team’

I’m not going to conduct a poll about it, and I’m not going to target-question American Indians, but I will venture to say some Washington football fans are uncomfortable with the team’s name. I know because I’m one of them.

So we partnered with Sneeki’s Tees, which designs awesome D.C. sports stuff, to make a T-shirt that a progressive Redskins fan can wear without having a racial slur across his/her chest. Consider it an act of silent, wearable protest. Plus, it’s a pretty good-looking shirt.

Get the high-quality, super-comfortable tee now in burgundy, black or white for just $24, and wear it with pride. I prefer burgundy myself.

D.C. sports fan and digital media guy that's been doing this since 2004. Once threw a football further than Chris Cooley.

Better idea. Find another team to root for………

Why not Washington Football Club? Too soccerish?

    How about Danny’s Divas?

  4. Chris Mottram

    May 17, 2013 at 10:19 AM

Like finding another team to root for is an option.

    PC Police, FTW!

  6. Chris Mottram

    May 17, 2013 at 10:33 AM

Ugh, I know JDobs. Hate how everyone is trying to be all “PC” and “not an ignorant racist” these days. Sooooo annoying.

  7. Some Redskins Fan

    May 17, 2013 at 11:14 AM

I’m too ignorant to know whether I’m racist or not

Fuck this shirt, cheer for the panthers tool.

  9. JDP

    May 17, 2013 at 12:22 PM

Looks cool. DC flag should be incorporated into more things like UMD has done with the Maryland Pride movement.

  10. Giles Parker

    May 17, 2013 at 12:59 PM

I don’t have a problem with the Redskins, Fighting Irish or any other team deemed non-PC. But, way to find a way to take a firm stand and hide your disdain under a different shirt design. Mr. Irrelevant is perfect name for that lack of conviction.

Somewhere, George Preston Marshall is laughing his ass off.

    I’m gonna get one.

  13. Buttheadbutt

    May 17, 2013 at 1:25 PM

If you truly feel that way, you should stop covering the team and stop being a fan. You have no conviction — this is just a publicity stunt.

  14. Chris Mottram

    May 17, 2013 at 1:29 PM

@Giles Parker: How are we hiding our disdain? It’s pretty blatant.

@Buttheadbutt: a) great name; b) correct, this IS a publicity stunt to raise more awareness about he name. We shouldn’t have to stop being fans just because the owner is a dipshit.

If you truly believe Redskins is a racial slur, you never utter, write or type the word again.Otherwise you’re full of it

This shirt blows and no longer checking this site out.

  17. Brian

    May 17, 2013 at 2:03 PM

Chris, I get that you don’t like the name, but is it really necessary to call the huge majority of people who do and/or don’t care “ignorant racists?” Self-righteousness isn’t very becoming.

  18. Chris Mottram

    May 17, 2013 at 2:03 PM

“I disagree with your opinion on this topic, therefore you blow and I’m leaving forever!” <--- rational response.

  19. Chris Mottram

    May 17, 2013 at 2:04 PM

@Brian: My point was that this isn’t just an issue about being overly PC, it’s about racism, which is an entirely different issue.

  20. WFY

    May 17, 2013 at 2:05 PM

The DC flag on the helmet would be great regardless of what the team is called if they played in DC. Merely good since they play in PG.

I like single bar facemask too.

i said this shirt blows, not you. Besides i rarely check this site out anyways so its not like i was a daily follower.

Sometimes I wish I had a sh** left to give about this.

  23. Brian

    May 17, 2013 at 2:09 PM

I understand that too, and my counterpoint would be that I know not a single Redskins fan, myself included, who uses the term in a derogatory way. We don’t dislike native Americans. We don’t disparage them or their plight. I’m just saying that 75%, 80%, 85% or whatever the exact portion of Americans who disagree with you is an awful lot of people to call bigots.

  24. Chris Mottram

    May 17, 2013 at 2:12 PM

@Brian: You’re right; I exaggerated for effect. People who don’t see the name as offensive are merely ignorant (although some are probably flat-out racist).

  25. Joseph

    May 17, 2013 at 2:13 PM

I realize that logic isn’t the Mottram brothers’ strong suit, but you say that your opposition is to the name and the “dipshit owner,” but didnt you become fans of the team with the “racist” name when someone else owned the team? Why did you pick the one NFL team with a racist team to support? By your own definition, aren’t the Mottram brothers “racist?”

  26. Zach

    May 17, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Brian’s got a point. Back in the day 75%, 80%, 85% of white Americans used to not like black people. That would have been an awful lot of people to call racist.

  27. Chris Mottram

    May 17, 2013 at 2:16 PM

@Joseph: You’ve cracked the case wide open, we’re HUGE racists.

  29. Jim Ed

    May 17, 2013 at 2:17 PM

Hmmmm… who to root for in this argument? On one side its the dregs of society from Charles County who think Larry Michael is the most honest journalist in town and will give their illegitimate children RGIII as a middle name. On the other are the self righteous set who I can already see congratulating each other on the roof of Red Derby for their enlightenment.

    I think I choose neither.

  30. nick

    May 17, 2013 at 2:20 PM

I just love how the argument is “I don’t care if its racist!!!1!11 this is MY FOOTBALL team and TRADITION and whatnot” no one is saying its not racist, they are just getting offended at being called racist. I love when people are OUTRAGED by things they think are “too PC”…sorry sirs, you’re outage over ppl being outraged about racism is stupid.

  31. Joseph

    May 17, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Chris- by your own definition, yes, you are. You also seem pretty intolerant of others’ points of view on this, so I’ll just start calling you ignorant intolerant bigoted racists. You clowns always like to use name calling to shame people you disagree with, maybe the other 80% of America should give you a taste of your own medicine.

Mottram Brothers= ignorant intolerant racist bigots!!!!

    May 17, 2013 at 2:24 PM

Can I get one these with COOLEY and 47 on the back? Also, I’d like the front to say REDSKINS instead of FOOTBALL TEAM. Also, I’d like to buy it from Urban Outfitters if at all possible.

    I’ll hang up and listen.

  33. Nick

    May 17, 2013 at 2:28 PM

Joseph- Thank you for reacting the way all racists do at being called what they are. Defensive and outaged. You are dumb.

  34. @mathewbrown

    May 17, 2013 at 2:29 PM

Redskin is a racial slur. That’s an inarguable fact. Saying that you don’t mean it to be offensive, or don’t use it in a derogatory way does not in any way change that fact.

  35. Joseph

    May 17, 2013 at 2:31 PM

Nick- calling me dumb doesn’t really advance the argument. Also, where’s your evidence that I’m racist? Because I don’t think the team should change the name? Is 80% of America racist?

Also, the Mottram brothers are intolerant bigots.

    May 17, 2013 at 2:31 PM

One time I fell asleep at Dewey Beach and all of my buddies called me a Redskin. It was the greatest weekend of my life. Why would anyone be offended?

  37. Nick

    May 17, 2013 at 2:33 PM

Joseph- sorry, you are EXTREMELY dumb. Fixed it

  38. Larry Michael

    May 17, 2013 at 2:35 PM

    Get a job loosers.

  39. Nick

    May 17, 2013 at 2:35 PM

Joseph- there is no argument to advance. To throw your hands up and say “WE CAN’T CHANGE THIS, IT’S ALWAYS BEEN THE NAME” makes you DUMB and incapable of understanding WHY it should be changed. PS you are just godawful dumb

  40. Roy Derpley

    May 17, 2013 at 2:42 PM

LOL @ the people getting all bent out of shape about this.

I love it. I have long been trying to find a burgundy and gold shirt that just says “Washington” on it. I dare you to find one. They don’t exist.

Also, I’ve been combing the planet to find a burgundy and gold curly W fitted baseball cap. First person to post a link where I could buy one such hat gets a free annual subscription to Mr. I.

  41. Joseph

    May 17, 2013 at 2:46 PM

No one is forced to be a Redskins fan. Those who find the name “offensive” have 31 other teams they can support. Judging by the 84,000 seats at FedEx Field and the franchise’s rankings in the annual Forbes valuations, not too many people are offended. Why should Snyder pay tens of millions of dollars to change the name to appease a small number of PC policemen who will just find something else to feign outrage over if he does? A name change doesn’t make financial sense, and it has next to zero public support…it’s not happening anytime soon. Deal with it.

  42. Larry Michael

    May 17, 2013 at 2:49 PM

That last comment was written by me. True story.

  43. Nick

    May 17, 2013 at 2:55 PM

Joseph- you are now depressingly stupid. Washington is my team. Always has been. It’s not being PC to call something racist racist. I know you are racist because you say PC, only racist ppl are outraged about PC. Go guck yourself. Hope you don’t have kids, cause they are going to be stupid and racist too.

  44. Boney

    May 17, 2013 at 2:57 PM

So I guess what you’re saying Brian is:

It would be ok to have team names with the following words: n*gger, coon, spic, kike, Charlie chan, slope

If 75%, 80%, 85% (or whatever the number is) were in support of it?

Just because you aren’t offended by it, doesn’t mean the race of people it demeans aren’t.

  45. Joseph

    May 17, 2013 at 3:04 PM

Nick- I hope you have lots of kids so there will be an ample workforce for my fast food franchises.

  46. Larry Michael

While I hate that the Mottram brothers are collectively taking this stand and I completely disagree; I still love the site and appreciate the time spent collecting articles on all the teams I love.
    But seriously, you guys suck.

    May 17, 2013 at 3:25 PM

I love how name apologists would like to cleanse the ranks of skins fans of all those who also think the name is racist.

You can be a fan of the team and also think the name is racist, and you don’t have to choose sides.

    It works like this:

    a) watch Riggo win super bowl as a young football enthusiast
    b) develop self awareness as a young adult
    c) become conflicted about team you love’s name.

moving away from DC/Skins Nation does wonders to clarify just how ridiculous the name is.

  49. Chris Mottram

    May 17, 2013 at 4:04 PM

    @hail to the warhawks: perfect.
