Todd Collins’ Mother-in-Law Drinks Todd Collinses, and So Should You

toddcollins.jpgIt’s probably been discussed somewhere on this site at some point, but the Brothers Mottram beverage of choice while watching the Redskins is a Todd Collins. This is a very complex cocktail that involves pouring Crown Royal into a glass, adding ginger ale and stirring with your finger. It earned its name during the magical run to the playoffs in ’07 …

Jamie and our friend/Mr. I Maryland Correspondent Andy starting drinking whiskey and ginger during the Week 14 game. You may recall this was the game in which Jason Campbell went down with an injury. In came Todd Collins, who hadn’t attempted an NFL pass since ’04. Miraculously, he led the 5-7 Skins to victory that day. And then continued to do so for the next three weeks, earning the Skins a playoff berth. The whiskey-and-gingers flowed through each game and thus this elixir came to be known as the Todd Collins. Granted, it has since lost some of its magical powers, but it works just as well for mourning as it does for celebrating.

All of this is a long-winded way of posting this interview Matt Terl was kind enough to conduct with the drink’s namesake at Redskins Park today:

Do you have a general comment on the existence of the Todd Collins?

You have this drink that they named after me … just don’t drink them and then drive.

You’re a wine guy. You ever drink mixed drinks?

If I’m gonna drink whiskey — on the rare occasions that I do — the only whiskey that I’ve gotten into is that Crown Royal. It’s a finely blended Canadian whiskey.

Do you have a ginger ale preference?

Yeah, probably Schweppes or Seagram’s. My mother-in-law, when she comes over, she sometimes likes to have one of those bourbon and ginger ale. So I’ve always gotta make sure that I’ve got that, and whenever I go to my mother-in-law’s place, there’s ginger ale there, too.

Your mother-in-law drinks Todd Collinses?

I guess so. I don’t think she actually uses a specific type of whiskey, but yeah. And she didn’t even know it.

You should tell her.

I should. I’ll have to tell her.

If it’s good enough for Todd Collins’ mother-in-law, dammit, it’s good enough for us.

Does Andy have a throw rug made out of blue turf, a la Boise State?

Todd Collins is officially my favorite backup quarterback since Babe Laufenberg.

I’m trying one of these on Sunday for the Broncos game. Hopefully our dive of a sports bar has ginger ale. Or Crown Royal for that matter.

Use alittle orange zest to keep those spirals tight.

Youll know things are bad when you start to “forget” the ginger ale.

Strangely enough, was at a wedding Saturday night, ordered a Crown and Ginger w/out knowledge of the TC. The guy behind me in line pointed out that my beverage was indeed the Todd Collins. Had a good laugh as he related the story. Then the Skins won on Sunday…coincidence? Needless to say, I’ll be throwing another back for Dallas Week on Saturday too.
