Should RGIII Be Benched?

Following Mike Shanahan’s press conferences on Sunday and Monday, the possibility of Robert Griffin being benched for the final three games has been the HOT TOPIC de jour around this team. So let’s talk about it.

— RGIII won’t get hurt. He won’t spend all offseason rehabbing. He won’t miss the entire training camp and every preseason game.

— Kirk Cousins gets to show some leg. If it looks sexy enough, we might be able to flip him for a draft pick or two. We need some of those.

— RGIII’s development is stunted via less live action. As evidenced by his interception on Sunday, he could use the game experience.

— Kirk Cousins plays a little too well, and we’re left with the only topic that brings out the stupid more than the name change debate: A quarterback controversy where there isn’t one.

What say you, fellow sad Redskins fans? Vote and leave your thoughts in the comments.

(For the record, I’m strongly in favor of benching RGIII for the rest of the season. The potential damage far outweighs the potential benefits of him playing in three meaningless games. Oh, and Pierre Garcon. He should be benched just so he doesn’t break Art Monk’s receptions mark.)

    Bench him.

Let’s just get through this abortion of a season with him in one piece. If it knocks RGIII’s ego down a peg, that might not be the worst thing in the world either.

Plus, if Kirk looks good and can be dealt that’s icing on the cake. If he doesn’t, then maybe we have an adequate lifer back-up.

Voted yes purely for chaos. #TeamChaos

The con of RGIII’s development being stunted by not playing is negated by RGIII’s development being stunted by playing for a team that has poor blocking, one decent receiver, weird play calling and near-league-worst D and special teams. Bench him now, cut your losses for later.

Bench him. He is the future, no matter what the mouth-breather PFTCommenter idiots say. Terrible to risk that knee. Also, kinda seems like KC sucks. Im willing to lose any draft potential as long as Bobby does not lose another ACL against Dallas in week 17, for no reason. Snyder needs to grow the balls that Snyder from 3 ninjas has and eat the money and fire Shanny. Let the interim coach bench RG, and lets all hibernate until training camp.

Only one day removed from the sky falling media reactions we’re starting to spin bad news into good. Only us Redskins’ fans can pull that shit off.

Cousins isn’t bringing draft picks and Drama Queen III isn’t getting better on the bench. There’s no good answer here.

Duh. He should be starting at fullback

He can gain far more doing a million reps during the offseason than he can getting his ass kicked for three weeks behind this shitty line. Nine hours of live action doesn’t trump months of practice. (I think he should be benched) (was I clear about that?)

“Duh. He should be starting at fullback”

haha… Agreed. And if he’s as good as he THINKS he is, he needs to fill the obvious holes at Safety, Punter, and Wedge-Buster.

@illformula – I have to agree with both things you said, but, this was an exercise of “yes or no”. Obviously it is easier to take a jab at our fans (many are dumb)and pick neither, like you did. But, Fuck it, cant we speculate?

Another positive: pissed off RG3 heading into the offseason. Seems like the kind of dude who would respond by putting in 18 hour days. That could be a positive, since those 18 hours will be spent improving instead of rehabbing/treading water.

Well, the secondary needs help, how is he at backpedaling? Sammy Baugh played both ways…

    @jarvis – i’m also a dumb fan. FWIW, I voted “yes.”

I voted “no” because while its probably the correct move for his health and well-being, my personal hell involves Cousins coming in, winning 3 garbage time games, and creating a controversy that gets beaten to death with thinly veiled racism over sports radio and the internet – (RG3 is SUCH a Diva, and Kirk just comes to work with his lunch pail every day!)

Seeing someone perform when the spotlight is off during the dying hours of a lost season are fools gold. See:

Blatche, Andray – Spring of 2010
    Young, Dmitri – 2007
Brennan, Colt – Garbage times everywhere

    Bench him.

Let’s see what Cousin’s can do. Upside if he plays well, is it increases his trade value. If he doesn’t play well, it’ll stop this debate in the future.

No benefit to RG3 playing, I don’t buy the ‘game experience’ because he seemed to play pretty damn well last year WHEN HEALTHY.

If the skins lose out, higher draft picks, better schedule next year, no real benefit of winning now.

if you bench him, he will cry and pout. his ego is fake and he needs all the attention he gets, good or bad.
if you dont bench him, he will die.

    play sexy rexy instead

what kind of message does benching rg3 say to the rest of the team? are they supposed to go out there and give it their all and risk their own health but RG3 can just sit on the sideline? It’s absolutely ridiculous this is even being talked about. RG is healthy enough just like the rest of the players on the team to compete.

just another shitty day in the life of skins fans. this shit is unbearable and un fucking real

@Beans: I see your point, but these aren’t high school kids. They understand this is a business, and why the team would need to protect its biggest investment.

@Beans The message it send to the rest of them is, “Play for your jobs, bitchez! This season is over and were looking toward the future.” Oh, yeah, and also what Chris said.

Can we please get over the single-season receptions nonsense? Does anyone here really care? I would venture that a significant portion of Redskins fans aren’t even aware of the record and who holds it and if Garcon does break it, he’ll never supercede Monk in their eyes. Welcome to the new NFL where 100 catches and 1,000 yards are not impressive anymore.

As for Griffin I say let him play. If you want to bench him the final game against the Giants I’m cool with that. He needs to play, to stand tall, lead the team and take responsibility for his season whether it’s right or wrong. That’s what your leaders are supposed to do. To borrow a tired cliche: you learn more during adversity than success. Let him take his lumps and figure out how to deal with adversity. Not to mention it’d be awesome to beat Dallas at home and crush their playoff chances with RG3 under center/in the pistol.

@Tom: The life-size cardboard cut-out of Art Monk sitting next to me in my office cares a great deal, thank you.

I am only fine with RG3 being benched if Kyle Shanahan is fired first. He seems like a bigger douche than his dad without the 2 rings…

I feel like I’m the only person that likes Kyle Shanahan. Also, don’t like the decision.

You should see my tweet from earlier Senor Pixels. It said “Unrealistic twist: Shanahan stays, there is a qb competition in the offseason, the competition drives Bob even more, he wins MVP, Skins 13-3. Then the Headlines on ESPN’s tickers could say “RG 13 and 3”.
