Weekend Preview: What To Watch

March is here, and college hoops is raging full blast, the Wiz are actually beating teams with winning records, and the Caps desperately need to gain ground in the Southeast Division. Below is a preview of what to watch, why, and the best place to watch it.

Friday March 1

New York Knicks at Washington Wizards (7 p.m.): This is a big one, not because the Wiz will make a playoff run or anything, but because it seems the young Wizards team gets fired up to play good competition and big-name franchises. Tonight is that chance. A good performance from John Wall would be great, especially after speculation that Wall was pouting on the bench during a retracted dagger loss to the Pistons Wednesday night. Best place to watch —  For this take your cheap ass to Verizon Center; you can probably get a deal on an upper level ticket and boo Carmelo in person. Also, please scream at the thousands of “New Yorkers” that actually live in Columbia, Md., and Woodbridge, Va., that will undoubtedly be in the building.

Saturday March 2

No. 20 Butler Bulldogs at VCU (Noon): This could be a great game. VCU looks to be on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, but a win here could cement that position. Butler plays tough defense and efficient offense, while VCU wants to press and run the floor for 40 minutes. And the Butler Bulldog is a boss. Best place to watch — Some place in Richmond? I have no idea; maybe there is a fun VCU bar in DC? I’m open to suggestions.

Maryland Terps at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (Noon): Maryland basically ruined any chance at an NCAA Tournament at-large bid on Wednesday night with a loss at RPI No. 134 Georgia Tech. The Terps are maddeningly inconsistent, and they downright suck on the road. Wake is looking feisty at home, illustrated by a whoopin’ of Miami last week. Who knows how this game shakes out, maybe Maryland responds and plays a complete game, maybe they get blown out and return home with their tail between their legs. Best place to watch — Ledo’s in College Park. Sit at the bar, get a pizza, great draft beer selection.

Washington Capitals at Winnipeg Jets (3 p.m): Man do the Caps need wins, especially within the division. What Caps team will show up: The squad that smoked the Devils last weekend or the chumps that got beat up by the Flyers Wednesday night? The problem with this Caps team is we never know who will show up, we must watch to find out. Best place to watch — Hard Times has Caps specials and there are locations in all reaches of the DMV, but I also like watching Caps games in Chinatown. Rocket Bar during the day can be depressing, same with Iron Horse, so perhaps Redline is the move for day drinking and hockey watching.

DC United at Houston Dynamo (8 p.m.): I know very little about MLS or the United, but here is a preview from Dave Johnson. Best place to watch — The Pug on H St. Fact.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at No. 7 Georgetown Hoyas (9 p.m.): Otto Porter is a beast, frontrunner for Big East Player of the Year and probably an All-American. Georgetown should trounce Rutgers, but this has been a wild season for Top 10 upsets. Best place to watch – Saturday night in Georgetown? This could be fun. I’d say Rhino, even though there are a lot of douches, but if you got the stones to really party with the college kids maybe go to The Tombs.

Sunday March 3

Virginia Cavaliers at Boston College Eagles (4 p.m.): So happy to watch the Cavs beat up on Duke, and then it was even better to watch Coach K whine about security and referees and hangnails.

Let’s hope the Cavs don’t suffer the same fate as the Terps following their win over Duke, though the narrative is the exact same. Big home win over the Blue Devils, followed by a quick turnaround travel to Boston. Best place to watch — There has to be a UVa. bar in Arlington, I just don’t know where it is.

Philadelphia 76ers at Washington Wizards ( 6 p.m.): My guess: Wiz beat the Knicks and then lose to the Sixers. I really like Bradley Beal. Best place to watch — If you watch all those games Saturday, maybe hang out with your family Sunday.

If anything was missed, let us know. Enjoy the weekend.
