Redskins-Panthers Predictions
By Jamie Mottram | November 2, 2012
My apologies for failing to do this for Games 1-8, but we’re back to doing it now. A reminder on how it works:
Our Redskins-loving “staff” makes predictions in the post, readers make predictions in the comments, and the commenter who comes closest to predicting the final score gets to make a guest post. Hip-hip!
Chris Mottram: Redskins, 35-20
I understand the Redskins defense is a complete disaster, but let’s not underestimate how bad the Panthers offense has been this season. They’ve scored more than 25 points twice in eight games; the Skins average more than 25. Sure, the Panthers have weapons, but so far, they’ve had no idea how to use them. Plus, Carolina’s defense is pretty shitty in its own right. This will be Washington’s first blowout of the season.
Matt Terl: Panthers, 31-12
If the reasons I have a bad feeling about this game were a mathematical equation, it’d look something like this: (ominous “must-win” quotes from Redskins coaches and players + the jinx of throwback unis + the homefield disadvantage at FedExField) * (strong-armed mobile QB ^ “RG3 is better than Newton” narrative – our defense) = DOOM. Doomy doom doom doom. That kicker guy is the only Skins player who lands in the Winners category on the postgame wrap-up.
I fear Terl might be right. This is such a classic Skins game to lose; come out flat, Panthers score early, crowd gets restless, etc. Carolina is definitely going to cover the 3.5, but I’m hoping RG3 figures out a way to win the game late. I think Cam and Steve Smith will torch our defense, but the Panthers run D could allow for Alf Morris to have a big day.
Andy Peden: Redskins, 29-24
Early in the game, D. Hall has a pick-six but when he jumps into the stands, no one catches him.
Todd Davis: Redskins, 34-30
I’m with Chris’ thinking though not on the blowout part — Skins D really is that bad. But the Skins haven’t quit on the season despite the falsity of their hope while the Panthers are a quitting, bickering mess we’re more accustomed to pre-RGIII.
Jack Kogod: Redskins, 34-31
The Redskins give up 550 yards, but win it on a late field goal from Cobra Kai.
Me: Redskins, 24-21
John Beck started this game last year. Nothing else matters.
Composite prediction: Redskins, 29-28

31-27 Skins. Defense is a sieve but also scores twice. RG3 does not play receiver. Ever. Again.

defense will look competent the first three quarters but will be unable to stop a long drive in the fourth.
special teams will find a creative way to fail like only half of the kicking team knowing that it’s an onside attempt.
dhall will be unnoticeable.
skins don’t regularly win the ones they’re supposed to but win this one 16-14
November 2nd, 2012 at 7:30 PM
Panthers 34 – Redskins 24.
Hate to be pick against our team guy but here I am being that guy.
I won’t be rooting for this outcome, mind you.

Skin 35-28

38-30 Redskins
Morris will have 100 yards at halftime, then Kyle will forget about the run like that Tampa game a few years ago. Since we now have a kicker and RG3 > McNabb^10, however, this won’t matter with the Skins scoring at will. Cammy Cam will get a late score to keep it close.

Head: Skins lose this in the usual play-to-the-level-of-competition way they always do to the the Rams et al.
Heart: RGIII. That’s it. That’s the list. If he’s healthy and taking snaps, I’m not scared of any other football team on the third planet in the solar system.
Final Score: Heart wins. Skins 30 – Panthers 24. This season gains some traction.

I have never wanted a comment section’s disagreement with me to be accurate quite so much as I do with this one.

“Is Cam back?” –> guaranteed headlines/narrative after this one.
Carolina by 10.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:37 PM
I’m with Terl. How many times do we have to see it before we start expecting it?
Panthers’ main weakness is their pass protection. We can’t rush the passer. They should have beaten the Falcons and the Bears. Cam goes bonkers and our O can’t score every possession like they can. Also, I’m going to this game- we’re fucked.
Panthers 52 – 24 and a miserable bye week
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:43 PM
We lose 9 to 10. Seasons over. Skins stop being fun to watch, b/c they are talentless and ran out of ideas on O.

Lots of Cam Newton pouting. RGIII nearly gets killed at least four times. Lots of Shanny’s face turning beet red. Lots of D. Hall getting torched.
November 3rd, 2012 at 7:20 PM
Redskins 27 – Panthers 6
We respond to last week’s blowout with a blowout of our own. Foreskin finally misses a FG, but it doesn’t matter.

Redskins 40
Panthers 31
RG3 pulls a 2010 MNF Vick and Cam goes out in the third with a lower body injury.
Hail!
November 4th, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Redskins 33, Panthers 30.
Cam Newton to Steve Smith connects twice but Griffin throws for two runs for a second and gets help from Morris. Kai hits from 40+ to win it as time expires. I witness all this from the field as my PSG gets recognized for his service.
November 4th, 2012 at 9:07 AM

Haven’t we seen this before? a one win team shows up and beats the skins. some random dude from carolina will score 2 tds.

Skins 31 Panthers 20. Rivera is fired w/in 48 hrs of games finish. Perry Riley gets a pick, Banks scores. Pat Fisher has a “wardrobe malfunction” during 80th anniversary halftime celebration. Over/under on my beer consumption is 17.5.

That’s a W. Big day for RG3, Cooley catches a couple passes, and the throwback uni’s work.

Should have checked your info on Panthers defense … they’re top 10.
