Word Up, Thome: O’s Trade Phils For 41-Year-Old Jim Thome

    By Jamie Mottram | June 30, 2012

Well, this is pretty awesome. The O’s sent two second-tier prospects to Philly for the left-handed bat of Jim Thome, which is sorely needed in Baltimore.

Not only do they get one of the best, most likable players of the past two decades, but Thome can still hit the long ball and take a base. He’s got a 128 OPS+ in limited action this year, and it was 131 in 324 plate appearances last year.

Even if he doesn’t do much as the O’s DH against right-handers, and they wither away in the AL East, at least we get to see a modern-day Paul Bunyan swing for the Warehouse (he poked one 454 feet just two weeks ago). Fun finish to a fine career.

Update: Here’s a good take on the Thome trade that doesn’t exactly see eye to eye with mine.

Trade two org/bench type guys for a cheap DH who at the very least gives a nice little PR boost and can still bash bad pitches? Me Gusta

I hear ya, Iodine, but those are pretty marginal prospects, and I just want to see Thome on the Birds, even old Thome. Hooray, emotional analysis!

And yeah, Belle looks ancient. Hard to believe they came up at roughly the same time.
