Roundtable: Terps Can’t Suspend Stoglin Because Stoglin’s Leaving

    By Jamie Mottram | April 30, 2012

So Terrell Stoglin is declaring for the NBA Draft after Maryland suspended him (and Mychal Parker) for next season. Do the Terps still look like a Tournament team next year?

JP Finlay: Once the Stoglin news came out this morning I got about 20 texts in five minutes. Almost every one contained three letters: “WTF?”

I don’t know how things got here. Whispers suggest weed infractions, but that seems a bit petty for a player of Stoglin’s caliber. What I do know is Stoglin won’t play for Maryland next year, and that sucks. A lot of people derided him for his shooting, but the kid had serious talent. Combined with a talented influx of freshmen, Stoglin and the Terps could’ve gone far in 2013.

Many “experts” pegged Maryland as a sleeper top-20 pick next year; the Terps will fall off those lists now. But with the freshmen class coming in and growth from Nick Faust and Alex Len, this Terp team can make a run at 20 wins and an NCAA bid. Turg has the team he wants, and I still have high expectations.

Little was expected of the 2012 Maryland team, and with few breaks that team still would’ve approached bubble status. With a higher talent level throughout the roster, the 2013 team should improve, even without Stoglin.

Andy Peden: The only reason I’m bothered by Stoglin leaving is I thought this team was easily a Tournament team in 2013. Without Stoglin, there are a lot more questions for a team that will likely be on the bubble. Turge has done a great job thus far, and I’m excited to see what he will do with a full compliment of players.

Brad Parker: Turgeon and Stoglin clearly didn’t see eye to eye. Before hearing about the suspension I thought this was a power play by Terrell. Now this and Parker transferring makes sense.

I’m absolutely in love with Turgeon and what he’s doing in College Park. Would this team be better in December with Stoglin, of course. But remember that he was driving Turgeon nuts so I’m not 100% sure they’d be better with Stoglin next March.

Years from now we’ll look back at this as a bump in the road. Stoglin will be missed, but he will not put an end to what Turgeon is building. I still think we’re a tourney team next year and a consistent Sweet 16 team after that.

    Does Stoglin even get drafted?

Finlay: I want the best for Terrell. He has some major growing up to do, and I expect he will do it overseas, nowhere near the NBA level.

Who benefits the most from Stoglin’s departure?

Finlay: Benefit is tough to determine. Faust will come in as the No. 1 option, and he wouldn’t have been with Stogs there. I also think there will be a bigger focus on post scoring, with Padgett, Cleare, Len.

Stogs leaving will also allow for more minutes to Cassell Jr. and Seth Allen, both freshmen.

Parker: It will definitely hurt the team next year but probably not in the long run. I really like Stoglin and he carried the team this year, but there’s serious talent on the way. Cassell and Allen now get more time as freshmen which should pay off down the road. Just a couple of weeks ago blogs were wondering how Turg would find scholarships for the next wave of big time recruits, well there’s two freed up for the Harrison twins.

Peden: Assuming Turge doesn’t add anyone else (with a five-man class plus RS Dodd and Smotrycz in 2014, I doubt he will), Turge has 10 legit players with two additional scholarship players getting a year of practice with the team. Seth Allen and Sam Cassell Jr. are still going to be backups to Howard and Faust but will see considerably more minutes without Stogs. Hopefully that speeds up their development and they’re a force in 2014.

Without Stogs, the offense should be more balanced. I’d expect that when the team needs a bucket, the offense will flow through Faust.

Yet another guy with talent and no basics or polish who will go the NBA. This is why the current NBA sucks.
