Should The Redskins Trade Up For Robert Griffin III? (POLL)

Conventional wisdom is that trading with the Rams to get the second pick will cost the Redskins this year’s first-, second- and third-round picks as well as next year’s first- and second-rounders. You know, give or take some picks, but let’s not dicker around with the details.

In my opinion, if Robert Griffin III is the quarterback the Shanaclan really, truly wants, I don’t have a problem with them trading up to get him. When I asked this on Twitter most people agreed with me.

But that was a small sample size. I’d like to get a larger response here, and to have a better idea of what Redskins fans think about giving up all those picks for RG3. So please do vote in the poll and expound in the comments.

  1. oh man…in the past I would say no a million times. I would say trade back a dozen spots if possible and get Tannenhill (or however you spell his name). But this franchise needs so much. Is RGIII a guy that finally signals building forward?

  2. I’m on the fence between “For” — as in, I’d approve at nearly any quantity of draft picks in a trade — and “Depends on the deal.” But everything I read makes it seem like RG3 is something special, a no-brainer first overall in a draft that happens to have two guys that fit that description.

  3. Yes, it will give us the franchise QB we haven’t had in the modern era, and Danny Boy will get his marketing cash cow to sell Jersey’s, suites, season tickets….trade the whole draft if need be……I’m gettin too old for this shit.

  4. I say go for it. Trade the whole draft if you need to. We need a big time QB to move forward, and this will be our best chance for a while.

  5. Skins are in good cap shape and had two good drafts in a row. Now is the time to do it. No guarantee they can get a franchise QB in next year’s draft or FA.

  6. I don’t think he’s worth that much. This team has way to many holes to fill. If we were a solid QB away we could just get Payton and use our picks on best available type players. We are not even close to that. I love the idea of trading back and having Shanny find a gem in late first to early third. Now that Vinny’s gone that is possible, right?

  7. With all the cap space and a larger than normal pool of UFAs, I think the Skins can fill a lot of holes through free agency without having to spend a ton on any one guy. The only position you can’t fill with a UFA is QB. This is the year to make to move. Do what it takes to get RGIII.

  8. This is a great opportunity to point out the value of having a great front office. In the 1994 draft Manning and Rivers were the two hot QBs and they went 1st and 4th. The Steelers really needed a QB and they liked Ben Roethlisberger and were able to wait for him at the 11th pick. They have since gone to three Super Bowls and won two of them (rape comments in 3, 2, 1). If the front office knows what they are doing then they should be able to make the same assessment and decide if they really need to give up a boat load of picks for RGIII.

  9. At the point we’re giving up 2 firsts, 2 seconds and a third, wouldn’t we be better off going the whole way and trying to get Luck for 3 firsts and 2 seconds or something? Cuz I’d prefer that deal to the above-mentioned RGIII deal.

(Though, I’d frankly be in favor of both, I guess; I want no part in using our first rounder just to spend 4 years developing a complete hit-or-miss guy like Tannehill.)

  10. If Vinny was running the draft, I would say send them every pick over the next 2 years, because those players would wind up getting cut anyways. But with Shanahan and Allen, they produce quality players no matter what round or pick. A little hard to say trade away 5 starters for 1, especially since we need a ton of work and aren’t one player away. Id love to trade away our pick for an extra 1,2 and 3 this year and a a 1,2 next year. Rams are in a good spot.

  11. For me, it depends on the deal. Also, this part is a huge key: “if Robert Griffin III is the quarterback the Shanaclan really, truly wants, I don’t have a problem with them trading up to get him.”

If they want to trade up just to have a young quarterback, I’m not on board with that. But if they really believe he’s the long-term solution and that they can build a powerful offense around him, then I guess I’m fine with it.

This situation does seem unlike all the other times the Redskins trade away picks, but that’s something everyone probably says each time it happens. The good thing is that they’d be dealing for a young player with massive upside at the most important position in the game.

  12. Hail yes! The time is now to get the QB of our future. Shanny knows how to find talent in the later rounds. So go for it. Got cap space this year to fill wholes in FA. The stars are aligned just right but they won’t be for long!

  13. Can’t trade the farm for him, far to much risk involved. However it’s not too outlandish to see him dropping to let’s say pick 4. IF Cle, has already acquired a FA QB, this might be the spot to trade into. Would only cost the Skins roughly a 1st and a 3rd.

  14. What everyone keeps on stating is that we have holes, need to trade back and accumulate picks, blah, blah, blah… Thats going to apply no matter what year were in, due to the dynamics of a salary cap. When is the best time to get a true franchise QB? We are as close as we are pobably going to be to finally grab our first true franchise QB since SAMMY FRICKIN BAUGH!!!
PULL THE TRIGGER MIKE, PULL IT!!!!!!!!!!

  15. I normally loathe mortgaging the future to
Move up, but this is the one time that I say do it. Every indicator both on an off the field point to this kid being a star, and this team is in dire need of a charismatic leader. Do it, fill some holes around him with FAs, and let’s see what happens.

  16. The best way to answer this question – would you spend your hard earned cash on Redskins tickets to watch RG3000 at QB in 2012?

I say go for it. True, it is A LOT to give up but the Skins have cap space to sign some FAs and had some luck with the last two drafts. I like the way the Skins have adjusted their game plan recently in drafts & free agency but this is one pick they should reach for, in my opinion.

  17. Everyone keeps saying we’re trading 2 first round picks. The trade floating around is ONE FIRST ROUNDER NEXT YEAR. We’re swapping our 6th for their 2nd this year….thank you. And with Romo, Vick and Manning in the East…yes we need RG3 at all cost.

  18. Normally I would say acquire more draft picks, but Shanahan has proven in two Redskin drafts that he drafts marginal to average talent in rounds one, two or three. Kerrigan average, Trent Williams average, Hankerson average, maybe Jarvis Jenkins is a stud. The 4-5 picks we give up will most likely be adequate players. The Redskins need a superstar, an Allpro type player. I think RG3 will be an elite quarterback, do whatever it takes to get him.

  19. depends on the deal. hate to trade that many picks for one guy, but then again I’d gladly trade Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Fred Davis, Brian Orakpo and this year’s pick for that guy.

  20. Depends on the deal and if this kid is going to be a franchise Qb. Nothing happens without a franchise QB, but at the same time, we cant leverage the next 5 years for one unknown this year.

  21. I think it’s a no brainer, do whatever it takes to get RGIII; I honestly like him better than Luck. He’s dynamic and dynamic QB’s are the future of the NFL. He’s damn near as fast as Vick was when Vick got drafted, and he’s a better passer than Vick was when he came out. Some nice WR’s are potential free agent’s; it shouldn’t be hard to grab one. Mike Wallace, Marques Colston, Vincent Jackson, Mario Manningham. Leonard Hankerson is back this year, if he improved his hands he has potential to be great. Our O-line is much improved. Our RB tandem should perform really, really well this season. We’re set on TE’s. Raven Mack, how can you even mention Fred Davis and Brian Orakpo with those two busts, whom aren’t even on the team anymore? So get RGIII and sign one of the previous mentioned WR’s.

  22. Some interesting points made so far, but also some uninformed people. Someone said Rivers, Manning, and the Steel City Flasher were drafted in 1994… someone lumped Orakbeast in with Kelly, Davis and a guy who isn’t even on the Skins in a hypothetical trade… on top of that, Davis could technically still be considered a bust and is no longer a Redskins himself this time next week.

I completely agree with the stance that trading away Shanny picks is harder to swallow than Vinny picks. In addition, having a lot of cap space for the first time ever allows us to possibly address some needs outside of the draft.

I guess I fall in the “depends on the deal” group. Regardless of how you feel about Shanny’s draft ability, it’s going to be expensive to move up and grab RGIII; and, sure, in the end it could very well prove to be worth it. However, if he turns out to be a bust, we are damn near back to square one and it will be under yet another front office/coaching regime in the Snyder era.

But hey, that may be easier to stomach than not drafting him and watching him lead someone else to the playoffs.

Only in Washington is it appropriate to pick the option with the least amount of failure. FU, Danny boy.

  23. I forgot to mention the fact that RGIII actually has a good head on his shoulders. Haven’t heard of any off the field problems with him, and I’ve listend to him talk. Also, illformula, I bet Cooley goes before Davis goes. Davis is actually a down field threat; Cooley isn’t, as good as he is. If we pick up another RB or TE this offseason, I’m going to flip. Last offseason we had what, six TE’s on the roster? Cooley’s done a lot for this team, but not as much as Portis, and Portis is gone.

  24. Well said earlier, Sammy Baugh! That was the last franchise guy for us. A 40 year old Joe Gibbs is not coming back to bring us 3 Super Bowl Championships with 3 different QB’s. We need a guy like RGIII. He makes the running game better immeadiately. Wet noodle arm Rex Grossman under threw so many touchdown passes last year! RGIII will upgrade the receivers just by being here. We also have some money to upgrade in free agency. This is the right time for our team to get back to the top and it starts with this move in April at the Draft. Do what it takes, remember that if Cleveland takes a Matt Flynn and Miami gets a “healthy” Manning, the price in April may not be as steep as it is on this February night.

  25. Is it morally wrong that I want him for the team only a small bit, but mainly so I can dominate in Madden only using the Skins?

  26. ^That was honestly just a bit of a joke. Honestly this is the best chance we’ll have for a while in getting a franchise qb. Can anyone say we won’t improve next year with the youth we currently have on the team? Ideal situation would be RG3 and Manning, but as some stats I’ve seen said the O-Line isn’t nearly as bad as some people think, the D is top ten when healthy, rb and te is set, so we’re honestly left with WR and QB as the biggest need. Tannehill and everyone else is a clear step down. Now or fucking never. (And yes I may be a tad drunk)

  27. if you trade all those picks and get rg3 and then use free agency to fill the holes, has the front office really changed from years past? dont trade for him. drop down, get more (unless a stud is still sitting there) and i still say go draft russell wilson in the 3rd or 4th round.

  28. I mean that’s true to an extent, but we’ve never really traded up far since what Chris Samuels? That worked out pretty well. And I feel Shannahan’s picks in later rounds have been far superior to the joke ass vinny years.

  29. I’m for it but in order to trade for RG3 we would likely overpay a buttload where it would make most fans unhappy because Cleveland has a TON of draft picks this year alone. Two firsts, two seconds from the Julio Jones deal last year.

As much as I like RG3, If we trade for RG3, we’ll likely be raped. No lube.

Matt Flynn, we’d have to pay top dollar for a backup essentially but at least we won’t have to mortgage the future.

Peyton Manning-stay away. Please retire for your health and safety.

  30. I don’t believe we should morgage the house to get one guy. This team has too many needs to do something like that. His asking price might be to high. There will be other opportunities. Don’t forget that Joe Gibbs won 3 super bowls with 3 average QB’s who performed very well under his offense. It’s not all about the QB.

  31. Def do it. First of all Bruce Allen and Shannahan has drafted very well in the past two years. They have gotten rid of old players and distractions. Alot of the talent they drafted are still getting groomed. I saw a comment that said that Kerrigan was average…No he isnt. It was his first year and it was very productive. The offensive Line is good but we need a Qb that gets the ball out of his hand. Trent Williams is a very good OT as well. Anyway also we getting Jarvis Jenkins bacc etc etc. Anyway They can get alot of players in this years Free agent pool. Alot of young studs. If it takes those picks and to also add Laron “Cant stay on the field Landry and Cooley in the deal then so be it. We were not blown out in no game this year besides the Bills game and they were a possession or two away from six wins and that starts with Qb. GOOOO get Griffin nd for some reason IF the colts draft Griffin then go get Luck. Either way we cant Miss out on a qb. Tannaheil or however u say it wont beat Grossman out to start. And the next time two let along one FRANCHIS qb will be available isnt going to happen year in and year out. Go get that 2nd picc. And I trust they will.

  32. Mike B – there is only one position we should morgage (sic) the house for: franchise QB.

I want him, hopefully shanny does too. and if it takes an extra few years to get the right pieces around him because of giving up draft picks, well that’s better than rex grossman underthrowing michael floyd all next year.

  33. The problem with the Skins is that Snyder can’t go more than 2 years without a big name or flashy new toy to sell jerseys instead of stockpiling draft picks. What’s worse is neither can the fans. Rg3 will be Quincy Carter part II. Watch.
