Ryan Zimmerman’s Contract Extension Is A Win-Win-Win
By Jamie Mottram | February 26, 2012
If you’re Ryan Zimmerman you’ve got to like $100 million over six years, with a no-trade clause to boot. If you’re the Nats you’ve got to like buying low on a premier third baseman, locking him up through 2019 or ‘20 (club option), when he’ll be 36. And if you’re a Nats fan, you’ve got to like that your team didn’t refuse the head cornerstone.
The Nats got a deal here, striking while Zim had two years remaining and was coming off of an injury-shortened season. Mr. Walk-Off seems happy about it, though, as he should be.
This sets a great example for Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, Jordan Zimmermann and Washington’s other young bucks too. If the Nats took care of Zim, maybe they’ll take care of them too. And if Zim gave the Nats a hometown discount, maybe they will too.
Plus, the extension is for fewer years and less money than what Jayson Werth got, which I was afraid would be a hangup. Hell, given that the deadline for closing this deal was yesterday, I figured something was hung up, but here we are.
Good for Zim. Good for them. Good for us.
Update: Adam Kilgore has more, including that $10 million is deferred until after Zim’s retirement, allowing the Nats to spend more money on others.
