Andy’s A-11, Where Gary Williams Shoes Are The Illest Shoes
By Jamie Mottram | January 24, 2012
Mr. I Maryland Sports Correspondent Andy Peden casts his weekly ballot in the so-called Atlantic 11 college hoops poll. But first, the totally awesome shoes Maryland will wear for the unveiling of Gary Williams Court.

The CAA is coming on strong! And we have 11 teams in the rankings this week!
1. Georgetown (16-3, 6-2) — The Hoyas are positioning themselves for a top-four seed line.
2. Virginia (15-3, 2-2) — After dusting GT, they struggled with VT. With Sene out for a while, this team has gotten real thin.
3. George Mason (16-5, 8-1) — Mason is piling up the wins but unfortunately they had a weak non-conference schedule with no resume-building wins. Basically, they probably have to win the CAA tournament to get in this year.
4. VCU (16-5, 7-2) — A couple DMV teams are dominating the CAA. Hopefully one of them gets the bid. Looking forward to Mason and VCU playing twice in 11 days at the end of February.
5. Maryland (12-6, 2-2) — Had a chance against FSU and Temple but they can’t seem to play a consistent 40 minutes.
6. Virginia Tech (12-7, 1-4) — They were about to be written off when they won at UVA.
7. Richmond (11-9, 2-3) — They beat Temple then lost to GW and UMass? I’m totally confused.
8. Loyola (14-5, 7-2) — Iona is still the team to beat in the MAAC.
9. Old Dominion (12-9, 7-2) — They get some credit for winning five of six.
10. American (13-7, 4-1) — Their record still looks okay.
11. Norfolk State (15-5, 7-0) – Hey, they’re undefeated in the MEAC!

GW didn’t just beat Richmond. They D-E-S-T-R-O-Y-E-D them. 18 point victory! The fact that you have Richmond on your list and not GW shows that you are either a Redcoat sympathizer or not paying enough attention to local college basketball outside of the ACC.

GW did destroy Richmond. I know, I was there. GW did lose 9 of 10 before their recent improvement. They are still 8-11 on the season. Win a couple more and they will make the list.

The difference between 8-11 and 11-9 is fairly marginal. When you focus on common opponents, GW is 2-1, Richmond is 1-2, though Richmond has more quality wins. I’d say there’s very little difference between the teams. This isn’t like Chaminade beating Virginia. This is two rather-equal teams playing each other and one dominating the other.

Thanks for showing GMU some love. You may want to be prepared for angry Hokie fans to point that Va Tech soundly beat FIU who beat GMU and beat UVA who thumped GMU by 20.

8-11 is a long way from 11-9. I can come up with a bunch of stats as well that says Richmond is better. Also taken into consideration was the game was at GW and Richmond’s PG who averages 12.5 ppg and 3.9 apg didn’t play due to injury. As for common opponents, Richmond lost at VCU, GW lost at home, Richmond lost at Charlotte, GW won at home and and Richmond lost at Rhode Island, GW won at home. Not sure that is a fair comparison when all three for Richmond were on the road.
Bottom line is GW is 8-11 on the season. They have won 3 of 4 and look to be getting better but they are still way under .500. I give credit to GW for the win but keep in mind this is based on the whole season and not a single game or even a week or two.

8-11 is not a long way from 11-9 mathematically. Also, I am biased as a GW fan, but I don’t even think Richmond is even above Loyola, ODU, or Norfolk after this week (I think Norfolk should be much higher). And as long as I’m nitpicking, I think you have the GMU, VCU, Virginia Tech order backwards.

I’ll admit I haven’t actually seen Norfolk State play. Their conference is terrible but they are racking up the wins.
On paper, VT should be the 3rd best team on the list but they just haven’t won games. Until UVA, they had beaten no one. A few wins and they move up the list.
GMU and VCU play a home and home in Feb. Should go a long way to determine the CAA champ.
