    Comment: The Skins Are Family

    By Jamie Mottram | January 18, 2012

Some comments are so good we turn them into posts. Here’s one by Ketel on Rocks from last week’s “Switching Teams” post.

If the Skins were swallowed up by the Earth and disappeared …

I’d probably stop watching the NFL. Sure, I’d watch some games, but I wouldn’t be putting a bunch of shit on hold for three hours every Sunday.

Living in NYC and stepping back a bit, I really see what makes the Skins unique. D.C. is a fractured city — Black & White. Democrat & Republican. Haves & Have Nots. Even the fragmented geography of Maryland/Virginia splitting traditional D.C. proper.

Sure, other other cities have those issues. But in D.C. the delineations seem so stark. And that’s why the Skins are special.

I honestly can’t think of another thing that can unite a K Street lobbyist and an Anacostia stick-up kid. The Caps, Wiz and Nats combined don’t even register on the same level as the Skins. So while this is an interesting question, and an entertaining one … I reject it outright. To me the Skins are a cultural touchstone to a city and people I love and grew up with.

What can I say? You don’t get to choose family.

I can agree with the analogy. The Skins are family…

It’s just, right now, it’s pretty dysfunctional–at best.

At worst, my family’s booked us a one-way ticket to Jonestown and is looking up Kool-Aid recipes online.

My family kinda sucks right now.

If that had been written in the late Eighties, or even the early Nineties, I’d agree 100%. The problem is, Snyder has destroyed something we all used to love. Change all the verbs to past tense.

The Redskins are bigger than Danny Boy, for all the reasons cited, and it makes me hate him even more for trying to burn it all down.

If the Skins are my family, does that make Synder my mom’s new husband that I refuse to call Dad? He’s not Dad, cause my Dad is Jack. He’s just my mom’s new husband that I hate so I just call him Dan.

From what I’ve experienced at FedEx lately, black versus white supersedes a love for the ‘Skins (ironic isn’t it)?
