Your 2011 Redskins Free Agency Primer

    By Jamie Mottram | July 26, 2011

The lockout-delayed free agency period begins today, you guys. As Redskins fans, you’re surely interested in this. So don your Offseason Champs shirt and check out this quick guide to the Redskins’ wants/needs …

First, from the Washington Post’s post-lockout Redskins story, this extended excerpt:

Bruce Allen last year shifted much of the cap burden into the 2010 books, which should give the Redskins a lot of flexibility in free agency this season. [...]

The Redskins likely will need to shore up their cornerback spot, deciding whether they want to re-sign free agent Carlos Rogers or chase four-time Pro Bowler Nnamdi Asomugha. They’ll have to resolve whether they think Ma’ake Kemoeatu is healthy enough — or good enough — to hold down the nose tackle spot in the 3-4 defense, or if they’re willing to pay for the services of someone like Aubrayo Franklin.

The top wide receivers on the roster are Anthony Armstrong and Malcolm Kelly. Shanahan could choose to re-sign Santana Moss, who’s 32 years old and has been the Redskins’ top receiver the past six seasons, and still chase a top-tier wideout, such as Santonio Holmes, Sidney Rice or, perhaps, Plaxico Burress.

The Redskins will also aim to address holes at defensive end, right tackle, inside linebacker and guard, and will be able to consider some of their own veterans who will hit free agency, including Jammal Brown, Kedric Golston, Reed Doughty, Rocky McIntosh and H.B. Blades.

So, yeah, that’s a lot. That was also a really long excerpt, so be sure to click through and follow its authors, Rick Maese and Mike Jones on Twitter.

Second, check out Yahoo! Sports’ list of the top 100 free agents. You can break it down by position, which is nice. Say you’re interested in seeing what the Skins’ options are at QB, for example. One click reveals the top three are Matt Hasselbeck, Alex Smith and Marc Bulger. Yikes.

Finally, check out our Brent Carothers’ list of 10 vets the Redskins may turn into Offseason Champs. It’s from May, but most of the names still apply, except for Kris Jenkins, who retired. I still wouldn’t put it past Snyder.

Let’s look at this from the reverse angle. What position(s) do the Redskins NOT need to fill or upgrade in order to field a playoff roster? Let alone a Super Bowl roster?

I’ve got OLB (Orakpo + Kerrigan), SS (Landry) and LT (Williams) and that’s it. Assuming you can accept adequacy at, say, 5 other positions, you still need above average caliber at THIRTEEN more positions.

Good news is that this can EASILY be accomplished during 3 days of frantic free agency.

If rumors are true you can add Orton to that list of possible QBs.

That top 100 list is free agents only. I think Orton would be a trade situation.

Orton would just be another stay afloat option. Blech. I know most will disagree, but I can stomach a 2-14 season if it means Andrew Luck or another game changer and more 14-2 seasons down the road.

That’s what I get for not reading thoroughly.

I want Plaxico. For real. And resign Santana.

this is a great list (which is being constantly updated) of all UNSIGNED COLLEGE FREE AGENTS and what teams they have signed with. Please note, REDSKINS are lagging waaaaaaaay all other teams:
