DMV: The Nyjer Morgan Fight Video

After what Nyjer did the previous night, the Marlins threw at Morgan not once but twice, prompting him to ponder it a moment, charge the mound, leave his feet on the punch, miss wildly and then receive one of the more vicious and well-deserved clotheslines in baseball history. The ensuing brawl was a good one by baseball’s standards, and bonus points go to 3B coach Pat Listach for being the first Nat into the scrum. [Mac Gs World]

  1. i don’t like guys charging the mound, but the Marlins had no reason to throw at him the second time. Stealing bases isn’t cause to throw behind a guy.

  2. According to at least one dipshit on ESPN (Boone?), Nyjer broke an unwritten rule by stealing two bases after getting plunked. I guess the Marlins wanted to drill him and have him not take advantage of it. I’m pretty sure this is the Nats’ first brawl. I approve. For too long the team’s been messed with in this fashion. Remember Robinson keeping Guillen in check? Remember Brandon Phillips much more recently?

  3. I tip my hat to Nyjer. He’s been making “boner” plays this year indeed, but him charging the mound and starting the first brawl ever for the Nats makes up for… at least two of his boner plays. he really showed his toughness too. Volsted is 6’8″! I wish someone would have knocked the shit out of uggla.

  4. Remember those years when the Nats had Brandon Phillips at second, Grady Sizemore in center and Cliff Lee as the ace?

Oh wait, nevermind. The Expos got one year of Bartolo Colon instead.

  5. Morgan was thrown at the second time because he stole two bases whilst the Nats were down 11 runs. While he is technically correct to be aggressive and stay in the game, the unwritten rule of the game says no stealing (goes for the team thats up and the team thats down) when a team is up by double digits.

  6. that rule about not stealing when you’re down is total bullshit. at what point do the marlins stop hitting. you didn’t see the orioles start beaning every batter when they got embarrassed 30 some odd to 5 or something a couple years ago. there’s no point in the game when you should just give up. i totally support this fight and nyjer in this instance. he’s still not very good but he was right to charge. the only wrong way to play the game is to play it the way bonds, clemens, giambi played the game. otherwise it’s play till it’s over. and if i’m wrong, i’m going to start beaning teams in softball.

  7. Unwritten rule?? Nyjer please.

Tony Plush kept his cool on his 1st HBP, even though it was the 3rd and most intentional one of the game, immediately manufactures a whole run out of it by himself (which is totally awesome), and big bad 6’8″ hurler thinks he can come back at him AGAIN?

#1 did exactly what a man & ballplayer was supposed to do in that game. He’s committed a few boners this season, but I respect the hell out of him for this.

MLB could use a few more Nyjer Morgans, and they could use some decent managers, so talented wild men like that can focus their competitive energy and reach their full potential.

Not squander their careers on shitty mismanaged teams.

  8. About time we had somthing happen with the Nats
You steal bases if you get a chance If you are down then MLB should have a rule game over I went to O’s game and they came back and won the game I thought they would lose by many runs Put some fire in the Nats and Nats Fans How many years with out a fight they did real good and Morgan showed up and played and now he is the evil one that home plate play is always dangerous One at high speed trying to score and the other trying to make the tag

  9. I do agree Jamie that the Marlins were going to hit Morgan until there was a fight and the stolen base deal is just a way to deflect fans/media from their true intent. Plus, who steals when down 11? that is just a bad baseball play and Nyjer has made over 30 outs on the base paths this season so the Marlins should want him to steal!

Also, then Nationals actually made a mini comeback after the fight and were only down 5 with a few innings remaining. This further proves waving the white flag in the 4th inning down 11 is BS rationale for getting thrown at.
