Strasburg Isn’t One of the 25 ‘Best Young Athletes,’ Says Really Old Magazine

Three things before we begin:

1. This list is two weeks old, so my apologies if it’s been blogged about.
2. Strasburg had made only two starts at the time of its publication.
3. Chris used to work at SportingNews.com for a spell.

Moving on: Sporting News’ list of the 25 best athletes under 25 doesn’t include Strasburg.

Among those it does include? John Wall, Ndamukong Suh, Evan Turner and Mark Ingram, whose pro careers have not yet begun. It also includes fellow pitcher Felix Hernandez and fellow MLB rookie Jason Heyward. Pablo Sandoval is No. 18, which is just weird.

Ovechkin checks in at No. 4, so it’s not all bad. [smiley face emoticon]

(Our thanks to Maryland sports correspondent Andy Peden for the tip.)

  1. If you actually read the magazine version of the list (their website didn’t have this sidebar) they have a whole section called “give em a year”. Strasburg is the top of that list, likely because as you mentioned, he only made 2 starts before the magazine’s publication.
Also, to be fair, John Wall, Ndamukong Suh, Evan Turner and Mark Ingram made much more noise in their college careers than Strasburg did. College football and basketball are much more high profile than college baseball and the minor leagues, but Heisman trophy winners and All-Americans are nothing to scoff at.
