Storen Cops Bat Boy’s Helmet, Gets a Hit

    By Jamie Mottram | May 24, 2010

As Joe Biden might say, Drew Storen is a storybook, man. The Nats draft him No. 10 overall last June, he signs right away, tears up the minor leagues, impresses in spring training, tears up the minors again and now, less than a year after being drafted, is dominating in the bigs.

Yesterday, in his first big league at-bat, he even got his first big league hit. But that’s not all; he strode to the plate wearing the bat boy’s helmet. I’ll let Adam Kilgore explain:

He needed a helmet with an ear flap on both sides. John Lannan tried to get him his. “I have a dome,” Lannan said. “It didn’t fit him.” Storen stood by the bat rack, still looking for a helmet that with two flaps.

“The bat boy was standing there,” Storen said. “I was like, ‘Hey, give me your helmet.’ ”

And so Storen walked to the plate for his first professional at-bat wearing the bat boy’s helmet. Against Millwood, Storen batted left-handed. He fell behind 0-2, the second strike on a hellacious uppercut hack. (“I was getting my money’s worth on that cut,” Storen said. “I missed that second pitch by about two or three feet.”)

On the next pitch, Storen decided he would shorten his swing. He flicked an 0-2 curveball into the opposite field, just over shortstop Lugo’s head, for the first hit of his career.

Considering how rare it is for a middle reliever to come to the plate, Storen may bat 1.000 for some time. If/when he does get another at-bat though, I suggest he revisits Bobby Savoy over there.

I love this guy and he seems pretty charmed at the moment. Let’s hope he keeps tearing it up
