    1993 Topps Mike Devereaux

    By Jamie Mottram | May 20, 2010

A fun debate broke out on Twitter yesterday and spilled over into today. It was started by the brilliant Jon Bois, who asked the simple question(s):

“Wait, is Eric Karros the most 1992 baseball player? Moreso than Todd Zeile? He just might be. This begs further reflection.”

I said Steve Avery. Others threw out Pat Listach, Phil Plantier, Andy Van Slyke, Travis Fryman, etc., before Bois settled on Danny Darwin, and then resettled on Candy Maldonaldo. This is how we spend our days and nights.

Anyway, Chris threw out an excellent suggestion of a guy I hadn’t thought of in some time, probably because he’s so very 1992, Mr. Mike Devereaux.

Absolutely the most 1992 player. I believe he was on the back cover of that year’s Orioles team guide making a leaping catch at the wall to save a home run (I’ll always remember that because it was my first Orioles game and they lost to the Angels like 7-1 or something. Look it up.)

I maintain that Devereaux might not even be the most ‘92 guy from the ‘92 Orioles’ outfield. Joe Orsulak and Brady Anderson are right there with him.

That being said, I once took a Devereaux foul ball off the leg. Good times.

One of my favorite O’s memories was a controversial homer he hit against the Angels (I believe) that either curved inside or outside the foul pole; called a homer though. The Angels manager was pissed. If Home Team Sports had HD back then it would’ve probably been conclusive.

Second was a Chris Hoiles walk off grand slam I was live.

I still remember as a kid seeing some O’s fan with the sign “Bell Biv Devereaux”. Quality signage.

Love that outfield, but Orsulak is more late ’80s to me and Brady is all-’90s, not just a singular year. Devereaux’s excellence, however, was far more fleeting.

Next card should be the major bust Glenn Davis. We seriously traded Steve Finley and Curt Schilling for that clown.

      And Pete Harnisch!

Thanks for digging up bones though Mottram. How easily I’ve thrown away my childhood memories when the Nats came to town.

Not sure about you, but I was raised with the understanding that it was OK to root for the O’s, but once DC got a baseball team it was over.

This makes me miss the hell out of Chris Hoiles for whatever reason.

Dan Gladden, Carney Lansford, or Pat Borders

Pat Borders is a really good one. So’s Kelly Gruber, though he may be more 1990.

      Pudge!!

Wow, 1992 was a loooong time ago. the red sox and yankees truly did suck, there were only 4 divisions in baseball, and Pittsburgh was the best team in the NL East while the philthies were the worst.

Terry Steinbach had a good run too. Other notables: Juan Guzman, Ruben Sierra, Chuck Knoblach. My friends and I play a game called “Commons” in reference to common cards. You pick a year then go back and forth listing odd ass players from teams.

      Ex.
      1992 Pirates

      JS: Bonds
      MG: Mike Levalier
      JS: Chico Lind
      etc.

Other names coming to mind: Shane Mack, Melido Perez, Jose Rijo, Andujar Cedeno, and Robby Thompson. Might as well throw in Mark Portugal and Pete Harnisch for good luck.

Shane Mack! You guys are really good at this game.

Jeff King, in the spirit of the ‘92 Pirates; & what about Jeff Treadway & Jeff Blauser
