The Nats’ Starting Rotation Is So Bad …

    By Jamie Mottram | April 9, 2010

… that SI’s baseball preview issue, which came out just before Opening Day, only got two of the five starters right, and those two were the blatantly obvious ones: John Lannan and Jason Marquis. Of course, those guys are only 3-4 starters on a good team, but whatever.

After them, it gets tricky. It took the better part of spring training for the team to round out the rotation, as the Nats didn’t name Craig Stammen, Livan Hernandez and Garrett Mock their 3-5 starters until late in the game.

So maybe we should give SI a pass on labeling Scott Olsen, Ross Detwiler and J.D. Martin as the team’s 3-5 starters. You know, with the uncertainty and all. But here’s the thing: Detwiler had hip surgery in mid-February and isn’t back for at least another month. Kind of a big screw-up there, SI.

But here’s the other thing: It doesn’t matter. Stammen-Hernandez-Mock isn’t much better than Olsen-injured Detwiler-Martin, and either group is just treading water until the threesome of Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann and Chien-Ming Wang arrives.

Here’s to seeing those names in the preview issue next year.

Through four games, no starter has made it past five innings.
