Bruce Allen’s Axe Is Long And Sharp, Cuts Five Redskins

With NFL free agency officially opening for business at the stroke of midnight tonight, the Skins made several roster cuts this afternoon. The fellas getting the axe …

  • Rock Cartwright
  • Antwaan Randle-El
  • Randy Thomas
  • Ladell Betts
  • Fred Smoot

Can’t say I’m overly emotional about any of these guys leaving D.C., although you never like to lose a guy with the lateral running abilities of Randle-El, to say nothing of his ability to sometimes successful fair catch the ball.

(Really though, kinda sad to see Rock go — he was our little Rudy out there.)

Update: From Rick Maese, Cornellius Griffin has also been cut. Expect more names to come …

Update 2: These cuts went down after Mr. Irrelevant’s business hours. We’re sure you already know about them by now, but just to have the complete list, they are: Todd Collins, Marcus Mason, Eddie Williams and J.D. Skolnitsky. Pour a little bourbon out for Todd Collins tonight, won’t you?

  1. Woohoo no more shitty (or shall I say non-existant) punt returns from Randle El! I’m kind of bummed about Betts though.

  2. Ditto on Betts and Rock. Let the Sproles bidding begin I guess. I liked him a few seasons ago, how old is he? How will he fit in? Does Betts’ release mean Portis is here to stay? Nevermind, stupid question. I forgot to take into account the Shanahan factor.

  3. Todd Collins was just released. I was really hoping that they wouldn’t waste the #4 pick on a QB but this is now concerning me.

  4. So, are we still backup RB by committee? Now that I’m in UMD/Nats/Caps mode, thinking about last season makes my head hurt. Scratch that, last season is the reason thinking about last season makes my head hurt.

  5. Collins had to go no matter what their plan is the next month or so. They cut a bunch of olinemen and rbs too because they are positions we need to address.

  6. It sucks for me to see Rock and Smoot go, Rock was just a great character guy and Smoot was god damn hilarious. But, I can’t fault any of these cuts.

  7. I know he isn’t as good as he once was. And I know we’re over paying him. But I question the logic of cutting Randy Thomas before an uncapped year. Beggars can’t be choosers and we are some panhandling mfers when it comes to O-line.

  8. If it’s not evident this offseason, it will never be: it’s a young man’s game. The best days for each of these guys is behind them. While I admire them, especially Betts and Cartwright, long-tenured Skins, their names alone symbolize a losing era in D.C. Appreciate the effort, but let’s clean house. Start over. It’s the right thing to do.

  9. Can’t say I watched First Take today. Or ever.I’m sure he was more insightful than Bayless. Hard to imagine, I know.

  10. So you’re the one still watching the zards? If everyone ignores them, they might get the message and go away (and depress a whole new market).

  11. I’m glad we finally started getting rid of these overrated bums! We have a few left that need to go as well, but so far I like the new approach of Bruce Allen and Shanny!

  12. I love what Bruce Allen is doing. Hope to see Westbrook come as third down or just to play when we play the eagles. lol. Gonna miss you Betts.
