The Redskins’ Really, Really Lost Decade

    By Jamie Mottram | January 19, 2010

skins-shame.jpgWe all know this was a shitty 10-year stretch for the sons of Washington. But how shitty? This shitty:

    Regular Season Wins

    1. Eagles — 103 (average per season: 10.3)
    2. Giants — 88 (8.8)
    3. Cowboys — 82 (8.2)
    4. Redskins — 70 (7.0)

That’s pretty shitty. Thirty-three-fewer-wins-than-Philly shitty. But that’s just the regular season. Those games hardly matter! Wait, what’s that? Regular season wins translate into playoff berths? Well then:

    Playoff Appearances

    1. Eagles — 8
    2. Giants — 6
    3. Cowboys — 4
    4. Redskins — 2

Ouch. On the bright side, math says the average division should have 15 playoff berths per decade. The NFC East had 20. Tough division, especially for Washington. But at least Dallas didn’t do so hot either:

    Playoff Wins

    1. Eagles — 10
    2. Giants — 6
    3. Cowboys and Redskins — 1 each

Yes! Not victory, but not absolute defeat either!

Really though, Redskins football is about Super Bowls, right Buges? And that’s one area the NFC East didn’t do so hot in:

    Super Bowl Wins

    1. Giants — 1
    2. Cowboys, Eagles and Redskins — 0

    Suck it, Philly!

Too bad I would trade my collection of Art Monk cards for the decade Philly just had. Still, the nod goes to New York as the NFC East Team of the ’00s. It’s close, but the Super Bowl takes the cake.

What isn’t so close is the contest between Dallas and Washington for worst place. The Cowboys were at least average, the Redskins were just shitty.

The only bright spot, relatively speaking, was Gibbs 2.0, which resulted in both playoff berths. Wild Cards though they may have been, they represent the only success of the decade, an accomplishment that looks even rosier in hindsight than we thought at the time.

Also, this is the bar that’s set for the Shanahan-Allen administration. It’s an extraordinarily low one. Good for them.
