Redskins-Saints Winners & Losers
By Jamie Mottram | December 7, 2009

WINNERS
Fred Davis — 5 catches for 53 yards and a TD, and it seemed like all of them came in the first quarter. Not sure why they went away from him after that, because he was just shedding tacklers, and even did a little dance.
Devin Thomas — Caught 7 balls for 100 yards and 2 TDs, and also drew a 31-yard pass interference and broke off a 39-yard kick return. This was the first time he’s looked like a stud receiver. Let’s see it again.
Jason Campbell – Was truly magnificent for 59 minutes, going toe-to-toe with the great Drew Brees and even passing Gus Frerotte on the Skins all-time TD passes list. And then he threw that awful pick in the final minute. I’m sure Skins fans somewhere are pinning this loss on him, but math don’t lie: 367 yards, 3 TD, 111.9 rating.
Albert Haynesworth — With him back in the lineup, and the other team couldn’t run and you started hearing the other linemen’s names again.
Quinton Ganther — 8 carries, 46 yards. Continues to look good running the ball.
The Dirtbags — Allowed 0 sacks, committed a penalty or two and paved the way for a mildly effective rushing attack. Amazing performance.
Antwaan Randle El — Caught a ball 40 yards downfield. I know, I couldn’t believe it either.

LOSERS
Gregg Williams — Gave up 30 points to an inept Redskins offense, one for every pound he appears to have packed on since leaving Washington.
Shaun Suisham — It’s the second game in three weeks the Redskins lost because he missed a kick from less than 40 yards in the fourth quarter. This time it was from 23 yards. Pack shit, get out.
LaRon Landry — He was all over the place, making 12 tackles, defending 3 passes and sacking Brees on a safety blitz. But he also gave up two long scores, the second of which was inconceivable. Also, if he wants to talk, that’s fine. But I’d rather it not be after first downs.
Kareem Moore — Picked Brees off in the last minute of the first half, then got stripped on the return and Robert Meacham took it for a touchdown. Fail.
Mike Sellers — Fumbled in OT (or did he?), resulting in New Orleans’ game-winning score.
Booth review — Replays showed that both the Moore and Sellers fumbles should’ve gone the Redskins way. Neither did, of course.
Rock Cartwright – I love the Rock, but he’s now carried the ball 28 times for just 77 yards in his two starts, and Ganther is doubling his yards per carry. Small samples, but still.
Fred Smoot – Got a case of the Carlos Rogers-ies on an easy INT.

MEDIUM
Greg Blache, fashion icon — His D, with a depleted secondary even, held New Orleans in check well into the fourth quarter, and he even wore camo (camo!) gloves, but then everything fell apart.
Jim Zorn — Almost pulled off the upset of the year. Almost. Also only burned one uneccesary timeout. This is progress.
Santana Moss – I was all ready to put him in Winners, until realizing he only caught 5 balls for 68 yards. It’s come to that for ‘Tana.
Sam Rosen and Tim Ryan – They called a good game, but it cracked me up when Ryan said, “Jason can throw the deep ball. People give him a lot of criticism that he can’t, but I’ve always been a fan of him throwing the deep ball.” Campbell has never been able to throw the deep ball … until today.

Mike Sellers’s continues to have an impressive 2009 season…. FAIL
December 7th, 2009 at 9:55 AM
I’m really starting to hate LaRon Landry.
Also, Campbell was brilliant in this game. He made one mistake (sure, it came at a bad time), but he was the reason the Skins were in position to win the game in the first place. If Suisham is able to make a chip-shot, JC’s pick never happens anyway.
Offseason goals: Firing Vinny; Draft o-lineman w/ first pick; retain Jason Campebll. Is that too much to ask?
December 7th, 2009 at 10:13 AM
I’m not enough of a skilled writer nor good enough at the english language to express how much I think LaRon Landry is a bag of douche.
Chris, what would you think of trying to get some draft picks for Portis?
Getting our second and sixth picks back would be great.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:42 AM
The only way we’re getting a 2nd and a 6th — or even just a 2nd — for Portis is if Vinny is fired and hired by another team. He’s the only GM dumb enough to give up that much for a 30-year-old RB on the steep decline.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:17 AM
I’m upset that there’s no media outcry about the officiating. I understand your a huge Campbell supporter, but I will continue to have my doubts until he leads the team in a 2 minute drill victory.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Hey, Portie’s only 28!
Also, dustinmfox, who do you suggest the Skins sign/draft/trade for to replace JC?
December 7th, 2009 at 11:39 AM
This is the first time in a while where the bad taste from a loss carries over to Monday morning. That was a real heart breaker.
I do wish Gregg Williams the best of luck on the birth of his child though. He looks like he is pretty far along.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:53 AM
Trade for Brees of course! I’m not saying under no circumstances should we resign him, but for what we may have to pay for him in the free agent market and a lot of people in the league are still liking him; I woud rather start fresh with a drafted qb and Collins starting for a little while. At some point, no matter how well he plays for 3 qtrs you have to ask, can he consistently win?
He’s never taken the team to the playoffs, Collins led us through that. He cant close out games.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:53 AM
I don’t understand how you’re a kicker in the NFL and can’t make a 23 yard field goal. What the hell is going on with Suisham?
December 7th, 2009 at 12:21 PM
I must be crazy for not taking this loss as hard as the last couple weeks. Losing to an undefeated team in OT doesn’t leave as bad a taste in my mouth (except for Brees comments after the game about the Redskins playing soft) than losing to 2 mediocre teams in prior weeks.
Having said that I believe the call in OT about Mike Sellers fumble was bullshit. Yeah he dropped it but then he got it back, let it go again but before the Saints picked it up the refs blew the whistle. Now maybe someone can educate me on this but the whistle signals the end of a play. How could it have been a Saints recover if it was done after the whistle?
Also I love me some Suisham but that was inexcusable.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:37 PM
Suisham is Canadian. And as Terrence and Phillip say, Blame Canada.
And let’s fast forward to this time next year when JC is not here and we are stuck with Jimmy Clausen and his elfish/hobbit looks sucking ass.
Should we draft a OL with our high pick or the Suh from Nebraska? I say Suh and then tell next years QB to stay in the shotgun and run for your life.

This lost left me totally drained. Don’t know that I can even watch the Raiders game. This team just seems snakebit.
Campbell had a monster game. At one point Tim Ryan said “Campbell has played out of his mind today”.
Campbell did, however, throw what would of, should of, been a pic-6 at one point in the second half in red zone, but the Saints DB dropped it. Next play Campbell threw a TD. So most of the bad breaks went against us in a catastrophic way yesterday. But we caught at least one break on that series.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:56 PM
I too hate LaRon Landry. There can’t be anyone in the NFL who celebrates more after routine plays. Lets see, he goes for the big hit and often misses and gets burned in coverage. Thats not good for a safety.
Campbell was great. Can’t wait to watch him do well in Seattle or Buffalo while we watch Jimmy Clausen go through rookie struggles.
Has Suisham been cut yet? How about now?
December 7th, 2009 at 1:15 PM
I hit 23 yard field goals routinely at the local park, while smoking cigarettes. I demand a tryout, and a paycheck for the tryout.
Also I’m growing a Redskins loss-beard. Won’t shave until they either give me a tryout or they win. And it’s not for charity.
December 7th, 2009 at 1:20 PM
What strikes me most about LaRon Landry getting burned is that he is supposed to be playing Strong Safety (sigh, RIP Sean Taylor). The sack of Brees showed how great he would be playing near the line of scrimmage.
Russel Okung needs to be the first round target, but Taylor Mays or Joe Haden wouldn’t be bad as well (though Mays has some of the Landry disease, all hit, no discipline)
December 7th, 2009 at 1:57 PM
Here’s my plan –
1) Fire Vinny & Zorn
2) Hire a real GM & Coach
3) Resign JC
4) Cut Portis, Samuels, Sellers, Daniels, Wynn, ARE and Betts. Mainly to clean out terrible contracts and old/injured guys
5) Keep Rock, Ganther, Mason at RB. Looks for a speed RB to add.
6) Draft OL in 1st and 3rd at a minimum.
7) Trade Cooley for 2nd or 3rd round pick. Draft OL or DB. I beleive that Davis can play and Cooleys value is very high right now.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:31 PM
Landry does way too much strutting around after his tackles. Yeah he can hit people, but for someone who routinely gets burned on deep routes, and especially whose team is now 3-9, I’d appreciate it if Landry could at least make it appear that the game isn’t all about him.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
he must not remember the Jacobs 2008 incident…..
December 8th, 2009 at 1:59 AM
That was a total team loss. The kicker missed a kick when he should have not, Jason Campbell was Jason Campbell and hurt the team with poor judgement and fundamentals in a key situation and Landry got smoked on a double move, multipul times. There were many failures and its impossible to pin that loss one person or one situation. The Skins lost that game by failing to make plays when it really mattered.
Just throwing this out there. I do not put this loss directly on Campbell.
My biggest criticism of Jason Campbell is that he has not been a playmaker. This guy throws for 400+ yards and no scores earlier this year. Statisticly, yes, he had a great game and in theory, played well enough to earn, even deserve, the W.
But the Skins didnt win. Campbell threw a pick when it mattered most and (yet again) threw to a FB, leading him into a blow-up tackle from a DB and causing a turn over.
I think my point is, I want the guy who can throw for 350yrds and three scores and then not shoot himself in the foot when it really matters.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:13 AM
Did you just blame Sellers’ fumble on Campbell?
Regardless, thanks for the great thread of comments here, guys. This is a big reason why we keep doing the site every day. So thank you.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:07 AM
This site is great and I’m a long time reader. I’m orginally from the NOVA but now live in PA. Best local sports blog around the internets!
I think this season is very similar to the end of the 2001 one. That year we started 0-5 then went 5-0, and finished 8-8. Snyder ended up firing Schottenheimer after one season, just as the team was showing signs of improvement. We all know what happened next season.
It scares the piss out of me to think we’re heading down the same path all over again.
The fact that the players haven’t quit on Zorn tells me he’s doing something right, and the fact that he never called plays isn’t his fault. It’s only natural for him to have bumps in the road. Same for Campbell. He’s not a WCO QB behind a sorry O-line and look at the strides he’s making.
If they fire Zorn, lose Campbell..we’re back to square fucking one. God help those around me on draft day should we choose jimmy clausen.
December 8th, 2009 at 1:50 PM
No, I dont blame Campbell for Sellers dropping the ball, however, the way that pass was thrown it put his FB in a position to be up ended by a DB.
