    JMU Football Stadium Status: Demolished

    By Jamie Mottram | December 3, 2009

Mr. Irrelevant JMU sports correspondent Todd Davis, not to be confused Mr. Irrelevant JMU sports correspondent Rob “Old Guys Leave” Abbott, checks in with an update on Bridgeforth Stadium’s extreme makeover.

Everyone’s favorite mid-major, James Madison University, has begun their $62,000,000 project to transform Bridgeforth Stadium into what they humbly call “the pre-eminent college football environment in all of Football Championship Subdivision”, known to most everyone not named Lowell Galindo as 1-AA.

On a day when Hofstra joined fellow CAA member Northeastern in abandoning football altogether due to the high price tag, the Dukes finished demolition of a different kind. (See above, and check out the webcam the university is hosting throughout the process.) While a few may question the wisdom of a state university spending a fifth of Elin’s pre-nup payout on a new football stadium in the teeth of a crippling global recession, the school would also like to remind you that, upon completion, they will also be able to hold a full graduation in a single spot now, wink-wink. More importantly, the place is gonna be awesome, like Chris Farley “AWESOME!”

Now if only we can get Buckhantz there for the grand reopening in 2011! He can throw out a huge “DAGGER!!!” when the Dukes begin stomping people in their new home.

After-the-jump bonus: What the 25,000-seat stadium will look like in ‘11.

I like the bonus “UREC View”. That really puts the size into perspective. VERY nice.

After a second look, that might be more like an “ISAT view” but whatever.

It really is freaking huge, isn’t it?

As a football fan, I love this. As a JMU employee who regularly has to walk back and forth between Frye and Showker…not so much.

I love how it dwarfs eagle hall.

Eagle Hall, previously known as “the tallest building in Harrisonburg.” Note: It’s all of eight stories.

Now, only if they would leave Mrs. Greens open on Gameday. Loved the Salad errrrr Hot Dogs they had in there.

The noise sucks big time at Showker.

The good: My two final exams for classes I have in Showker, which is damn close to the field, are in another building.

The bad: I have two final exams on a freaking Saturday. JMU -1.

Looking forward to not sleeping tonight..
