    DMV: Remember Ronnie Belliard Dancing

    Monday, August 31st, 2009

Nats trade Ronnie Belliard to L.A. for a reliever and PTBNL. Belliard hit the ball okay for the Nats, but he also played a short RF instead of 2B. Mostly, we’ll remember him for being fat. That, and dancing to LL. [Nats Journal]

Moving Belliard is a minor deal, but a good one for the Nats. [...]

    Redskins-Patriots Preseason Live Blog

    Friday, August 28th, 2009

The last time we tried this it didn’t go well, mostly because the NFL is evil and blacked the game out on DirecTV here in North Carolina. Bastards. But tonight’s game is on CBS, and the dreaded Cooleys are appropriating our idea, so let’s get back in the saddle, shall we?

Vintage Video: Art Monk & the Fun Bunch

    Friday, August 28th, 2009

Stet Sports shares this footage from 1983 for you, sons of Washington:

So much to love here. Let’s go ahead and list the reasons:

In-their-prime Madden and Summerall on the call
Monk burning his man on a stop-and-go
    Theismann hitting him in stride
Jacoby beating everyone to the celebration
    “Downtown” Charlie Brown getting feisty
    Joe Gibbs’ sweater-hat combo
    The freaking Fun Bunch, man

    The [...]

DMV: Livan Has Vanilla Ice’s Eyebrows

    Friday, August 28th, 2009

Livo sported some early ’90s-style shaved eyebrows during his Nats 2.0 debut, which would look great on Eyebrows Lannan. [Nats Nation]
Livan, who gave so much in ‘05, wants to come back in ‘10. [Nats Journal]
Nyjer Morgan, after batting .351, scoring 35 runs and stealing 24 bases in 49 games with the Nats, breaks his hand [...]

Brian Mitchell Gets Knocked the Fug Out

    Thursday, August 27th, 2009

National Football Post has a great little story from 1994 that corresponds with the following video (note: it’s audio-less):

I loved B-Mitch as a player but don’t care much for his media stylings, and certainly sided with Portis when they beefed last fall, so, yeah, that brought with it a bit of perverse pleasure.

DMV: In Which Muggsy Bogues Is 13′ Tall

    Thursday, August 27th, 2009

If/when the Wiz go back to being the Bullets, I expect this Manute/Mugsy remix poster to be on billboards. [@ericneely]
    Durantula-to-D.C.-in-’12 is the new LeBron-to-NYC-in-’10. [@danshanoff]
Chris Mannix puts the Wiz at No. 8 in his NBA power rankings. [SI.com]
Gil’s first Wiz deal is among the top 10 values of the ’00s. [Ball Don't Lie]

Yes, Chris Samuels Is Really, Really Good

    Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

We’re in the minutia now, but anytime Football Outsiders managing editor Bill Barnwell issues a response to things being said in our comments, it shall be published. Our thanks to Bill, and buy the Football Outsiders Almanac already.
The thing about left tackles is that left tackles allow more sacks than any other position on the [...]

DMV: Jim Traber Will Chase You Down

    Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Oriole of my youth Jim Traber is an Oklahoma City sports talk radio guy now and has made blog headlines lately for minor beef with Nick Collison and Bill Simmons, which inadvertently led me to this clip of him charging and chasing a Japanese pitcher before falling and getting kicked in the face. Somehow, I [...]

Ten Skins Stats to Impress Your Friends

    Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Regular readers know I kneel at the stat-laden altar of Football Outsiders, especially when it comes to their Almanac.* In a previous post, upon skimming a soft copy of this year’s model, I shared their thoughts on Jason Campbell and Colt Brennan. But now that I’ve perused the hard copy (warning: for serious NFL fans [...]

DMV: Jersey Gaffe No. 2 for the Redskins

    Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

WaPo Skins reporter Jason Reid debuts a new feature that’s kinda like our Winners & Losers, only if Winners & Losers was written by someone embedded at Skins Park. Here’s the best part:
“After his Redskins debut, Albert Haynesworth said he removed himself from the game on at least two occasions because he couldn’t breathe. He [...]
