Safe Travels, George Sherrill, And May Your Brim Always Be Fresh

    By Chris Mottram | July 30, 2009

sherrillhat.jpgFinally, between the massive combined shitpile that is the O’s and Nats, a player was traded. George Sherrill has been dealt to the Dodgers in exchange for 3B Josh Bell and SP Steve Johnson.

Bell, from what I can gather, is a decent prospect at a position that will need to be filled soon. He was a fourth round pick in ‘05 and has a .296 BA, .883 OPS, 11 HR stat line in 94 games of AA ball this season.

Johnson, a 13th-rounder in the same draft, has a 3.61 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP and a 117 strikeouts in a 107 innings pitched in AA this season.

So, overall, not a bad haul for Sherrill, a mediocre closer, who the O’s got as a small part of the Erik Bedard trade back in Feb. ‘08.

I’lll miss Sherrill, but any move expediting Mora’s departure is A-OK.

Also, let the Jim Johnson-as-closer era begin.
