DMV: Too Late for Nyjer to Win the MVP?

    By Jamie Mottram | July 29, 2009

DMV is a daily roundup of District-Maryland-Virginia (mostly) sporting links.

Since acquiring Nyjer Morgan almost one month ago, the Nats have won 39 percent more games, scored 14 percent more runs and allowed 15 percent fewer runs. How much of that is attributed to Morgan I don’t know, but he has played a stellar CF, hit .389 and stolen 13 bases. He also led off yesterday’s game, the Nats’ fourth straight win, with his first HR. [WaPo]

Counterpoint: The Nats should certainly trade Willingham. [FJB]

Despite everything the local baseball wonks would have us (few) Nats fans believe, the equation looks like this: Morgan + Willingham = ANY chance of success in the next few years.
Their production to value ratio enables the team to go for a big-name SP (or two?) and shore up the bullpen.
Johnson, Guzman, Harris (Sorry big Willie) = expendable, and the team should do the smart thing by trade deadline for once.

Someone’s gotta go in the Dunn/Johnson/Willingham triumvirate. Without knowing what’s being offered I can’t say which one, but to retain all three would be to fail.
