Catch of the Year: Maxwell Robs Jones
By Jamie Mottram | May 24, 2009
Considering the only baseball I watch is Nats and/or Orioles baseball, that headline is not entirely accurate, but this is a helluva catch. It’s what Nick Markakis’ would’ve been if not for Baltimore’s Bartman. It’s Justin Maxwell robbing Adam Jones in the first inning yesterday (click the pic for the video):
Maxwell, who went to Maryland and was drafted in the fourth round of ‘05, is, according to MASN’s Bob Carpenter, the finest defensive centerfielder in the Nats organization. Unfortunately for him, his minor league stats are comparable to Nats CF Elijah Dukes major league stats. Also, Dukes is younger. Still, Elijah tends to get hurt, so maybe Maxwell has a chance.
His snag sparked a 21st-century pitching duel between Ross Detwiler, Koji Uehara and eight relievers which the O’s won 2-1 despite only three hits. Washington has now lost eight of nine, but, you know, great catch!
