Nats and O’s Week 6 Winners & Losers
By Jamie Mottram | May 18, 2009
Winners & Losers for a week when the Nats went 1-6 and the O’s 3-3 …
WINNERS
Another fine outing from Shairon Martis, who’s now 5-0. The rest of the Nats are 6-25. That’s some Steve Carlton-in-’72-level shit right there. Of course, his other stats, especially K/BB ratio, are unremarkable, even for a 22-year-old.
Christian Guzman leads the NL in batting; still no walks.
The streak is over, but Ryan Zimmerman hit three HR.
Nick Johnson keeps hitting, keeps walking (average and OBP up to .333 and .421) and keeps Nats fans torn on whether or not to trade him.
Josh Willingham hit two HR in 21 AB, which is in line with his HR:AB ratio.
Our very own Kenny Powers (Ron Villone) is scoreless in seven games.
For most teams, a 5 2/3 IP, 2 ER performance is to be expected. For others (see: Rich Hill’s AL debut for Baltimore), it’s a revelation.
Two saves and no earned runs for George Sherrill? It’s like the first half of last year all over again!
LOSERS
The past two seasons, when Jeremy Guthrie was quality, Camden Chat said he had a posse. Now that he’s scuffling, he has a stalker.
Adam Jones tweaked a hammy, missed a few games. Please come back.
Thanks to two more from Joe Beimel and Jesus Colome, the Nats pen has 12 blown saves and is on pace to break the record by 20. That’s a lot of fun.
Not helping was three more awful starts from Daniel Cabrera and Scott Olsen, who are now a combined 1-9 with a 6.61 ERA. Pray for Ross Detwiler and Stephen Strasburg to realize their potential, swiftly.
Two starts, two losses for Jordan Zimmermann, who has allowed five or more in each of his past four starts. Uh oh.
Not entirely his fault, but I kinda hate him, so let’s blame the worst play ever on Anderson Hernandez.
