If Dirty Sanchez Is in, Then JC Wants Out

    By Jamie Mottram | April 24, 2009

Should the Skins draft Sanchez, these are the scenarios as I see them:

Best-case — They get him at 13, Campbell plays this season (the final one on his deal), the Dirty is groomed into the franchise QB Snyder thinks he is.

Middling– They trade up to get him, JC plays, Sanchez becomes good.

Kick-me-in-the-jimmy – They trade up, JC wants a trade, Sanchez busts.

I’m not comfortable with any of the three. As previously stated, Campbell is our guy, an already average, still improving QB whom the Redskins have invested loads of time and draft picks in.

That said, I didn’t know the third, kick-me-in-the-jimmy scenario existed. I knew that drafting Sanchez would be a bitter pill for JC, especially after the Cutler fiasco, but I figured he’d swallow it nonetheless.

He’s a pro, a guy capable of weathering the storm of bullshit that Danny & Vinny rain down upon this franchise and its following. Even if they bring the Dirty in, he’d ride the pine in ‘09 while Campbell played out his contract year, Drew Brees in ‘05-style (after San Diego had drafted Philip Rivers).

That’s how you get paid. Not by pouting and demanding a trade when shit goes pear-shaped. But here’s Campbell, reportedly saying he’ll request to be traded should the Skins draft Sanchez. That just doesn’t make sense to me, and it doesn’t make sense for Campbell either.

What’s he gonna do? Get traded to the Jets? Learn a new system, a new line, new receivers, etc.? How’s that gonna improve his value a year from now? It won’t. It wouldn’t. He’d probably flounder in NY, or wherever, and struggle to sign on elsewhere as a starter in ‘10.

But here’s the thing, and this is why this rules for the 81 percent of Skins fans who don’t want Sanchez: JC just put Danny & Vinny over a barrel. If he’s not gonna play for them this year, and those little men draft Sanchez, the Skins are stuck starting a rookie with little college experience or a career backup, either of which ends this season before it begins.

So that’s where we’re at. Campbell’s savvier than I thought, tipping his hand on NFL Draft Eve, forcing Danny & Vinny to play theirs without the safety net they wish they had. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, I suppose.

Normally, someone in Jason Campbell’s position is not the best to play the “mutually assured destruction” card, but Dan Snyder has poisoned the well so much it is appreciated.

Fourth scenario: Any of those 3 scenarios happen, I buy my DeAngelo Williams jersey and never speak of this 26 year affair with Washington again.

Dare I say it: if the middling scenario plays out I will hate the Redskins organization more than the Cowboys, Giants and Eagles combined. I am that upset about this.

If 81 percent of Skins fans are against this and the majority of the moves the team makes, why do these same fans continue to finance these moves year in and year out?

Because the Redskins have the most loyal fans in football. Blindly loyal, but loyal. We aren’t going to stop going to/watching the Redskins just because we’re stuck with an incompetent owner … despite what I may have said in Comment 2.

The only problem in thinking that Campbell has Danny and Vinny over a barrel is that it assumes Vinny and Danny think intelligently about all this stuff. For all we know they hear this news and think “See, now we HAVE to get Sanchez, Campbell’s threatening to leave” or “Sanchez can start on Day 1, we did have a great dinner with the guy, what other proof do we need?” or “Sanchez is the next Matt Ryan, who needs that Campbell guy anyway”. We must always remember the Skins management is insane.

Don’t forget the other possibility –

Skins trade up (2009 and 2010 1st rounders), JC is traded (for a 4th? or 5th? rounder), Sanchez looks great and Skins fans have their franchise QB when Trent Cole, Osi or Ware break him in two because the Skins are playing Heyer or Jansen at RT neither of who can block dick at this point.

      F ME!

Because they’re the Redskins. They could put Kim Jong Il under center and we’d be there cheering.
