Initial Reactions to Redskins ‘09 Schedule

    By Chris Mottram | April 15, 2009

    sked1.jpgSunday, Sept. 13 @ New York Giants 4:15 p.m. ET FOX
Starting the season in the Meadowlands for the second straight year. An unexpected win here would probably boost the team more so than a loss would deflate it. At least it’s not nationally televised this time around. And the Giants won’t have Plax to carve up the secondary.

Sunday, Sept. 20 St. Louis Rams 1 p.m. ET FOX
Revenge game! Seriously, the Skins lost to this team last season? It’ll be nice to open the home schedule with a win.

Sunday, Sept. 27 @ Detroit Lions 1 p.m. ET FOX
How do we get lucky enough to play the Rams and Lions … again … in back-to-back weeks … at the start of the season? The scheduling gods were good.

Sunday, Oct. 4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1 p.m. ET FOX
Another very winnable game considering how dismantled the Bucs seem to be right now. Although let us not forget what Leftwich did to the Skins last season as a Stiller. 3-1 through the first quarter of the season would be very nice.

Sunday, Oct. 11 @ Carolina Panthers 1 p.m. ET FOX
FIRST ANNUAL MISTER IRRELEVANT TAILGATE PARTY! I live about a mile from the stadium; Jamie will be making the trip from Wilmington and so too will some friends from the D.C. area. More details to follow over the next six months, but it’s never too early to start planning. It’s just a six hour drive from the D.C. area, and Monday (Columbus Day) is a holiday for the government employees out there. Hopefully it’ll be more fun than the Skins-Panthers preseason tailgate I attended last year as the sole, lonely Redskins fan in the bunch.

Sunday, Oct. 18 Kansas City Chiefs 1 p.m. ET CBS
Who knows what to expect from the Chiefs this season with a good quarterback and new coach. Herm Edwards is no longer on the sideline, so they should be considerably better. Nice to start the AFC West slate at FedEx either way.

    sked2.jpgMonday, Oct. 26 Philadelphia Eagles 8:30 p.m. ET ESPN
Skins’ first prime time game of the season comes on Monday night, against Philly, at home. No one will be pumped up for this one at all.

    Sunday, Nov. 1 BYE
Mid-season bye is a better time than any, I suppose.

Sunday, Nov. 8 @ Atlanta Falcons 1 p.m. ET FOX
Washington’s all-time winning percentage against Atlanta is 74%. This is the highest of any team the Skins have played at least 10 times in their franchise history. I bet you didn’t know that. Last time the Skins played them, they lost. That was during the 5-11 season in ‘06.

Sunday, Nov. 15 Denver Broncos 1 p.m. ET CBS
How FUN would this game have been had the Skins traded their entire future to the Broncos for a slightly above average quarterback?!

Sunday, Nov. 22 @ Dallas Cowboys 1 p.m. ET* FOX
I’d love to be there in person and see how pretty a Campbell-to-Moss TD looks on Jerry Jones’ fancy new 50-yard-long HD Jumbotron.

Sunday, Nov. 29 @ Philadelphia Eagles 1 p.m. ET* FOX
Back-to-back road games against Dallas and Philly for the second year running. Last year, we won both. Just sayin.

Sunday, Dec. 6 New Orleans Saints 1 p.m. ET* FOX
Happy to have the Saints coming to D.C. to play a cold weather game outdoors. Although we did beat them last season in a warm weather game in Week 2 at FedEx.

    sked3.jpgSunday, Dec. 13 @ Oakland Raiders 4:05 p.m. ET* FOX
Oakland could be anywhere form awful to mediocre this season, so who knows. Last time Washington went west, it lost to the 49ers. Hopefully this ends more favorably … and is a game that actually matters so late in the season.

Monday, Dec. 21 New York Giants 8:30 p.m. ET ESPN
Even if this one doesn’t matter, it still matters. The last time the Giants came to FedEx it was an ugly, raining, cold, sloppy, shitty day. And we lost.

Sunday, Dec. 27 Dallas Cowboys 8:20 p.m. ET* NBC
Back-to-back prime time and divisional games. At best, these will be make-or-break contests for the Skins’ playoff hopes. At worst, well, see comments about Giants game above.

Sunday, Jan. 3 @ San Diego Chargers 4:15 p.m. ET* FOX
I really, really hope our season doesn’t come to down to a game at San Diego. That is all I have to say about that.

Incredibly premature prediction: 10-6. It’s a soft schedule, which gives me hope. (Middle of the pack based off last season’s records, which is as good as it gets when you play six games in the NFC East.) This also assumes that we draft fat boys, as Fred Smoot has instructed, Haynesworth is productive/healthy, Mark Sanchez is not our quarterback, and Jason Campbell continues to improve in his second year in Zorn’s system.

So is Charlotte going to get introduced to The Mayor on Oct 11? I sure hope so.

Looking forward to the 1st Annual Mister Irrelevant Tailgate!! Does that mean you all are supplying the beers, bourbon and burgers? Cause I’ll take 3 beers, 1 bottle of bourbon and 4 burgers. Thanks

I could see 9-7 out of this lineup, but I also see you guys drafting Sanchez and being pressured to start him, so….

      Chris,

I’m working on being at that game in Charlotte. I may see if my sister and her husband (big Panther fans) are up to go with me and my wife (big Redskins fans) to the game.

Oh, and there will be TONS of Skins fans at that game. Remember that the Carolinas were Redskins Country before 1995.

Yep, I’m well aware of the massive Skins following still lingering Charlotte. The bar right up the block from me is a Skins bar during the season.

The President and I already planned on making the Charlotte trip. We thought it was last year, but no, its this year. Were in for sure.

I have 3 nights at any Ritz Carlton for free and there is one in NC. I left the certificate at home, but I will be booking it tommorow.

Me and the President and both of our girlfriends for sure, I doubt anyone else, as the Coach and SOC are now both proud parents of the newest Redskins fan/DTC Member.

Keep us 4 in mind if your investigating ticket packages. I can get you the cash when you need it.

This is the 9th season for the DTC. And since 1999 I have only missed one home game. Cant wait for training camp!

Also, I disagree and think we have a better percantage against the Lions.

Where can we look that up?

Well, see you gents on October 11th. Go Cats.

I believe we are 26-10 against the Lions (72%). 29-10 if you count the postseason (74.3%).

You could break this up as two of the Lions’ wins were when they were the Spartans.

Also, since 1968 we’ve won 22 of 24 against Detroit. Since the Skins moved to Washington in 1937, we are 29-5 against Detroit.

Mayor: You can check it here:

      http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/was/#headtohead

      73.7% vs. Atlanta … 73% vs. Detroit.

Trying to score tickets to the Panthers game right now. My wife and I are skins fans down in Spartanburg SC. We both grew up on the Eastern Shore though and definitely down for getting hammered before the game with some skins fans. Hope it turns out better than last years pre-season game, that was ugly.

It was close! I just knew we had a pretty good record against them. With two of those losses pretty recent (10 years) if I recall.

7-1 against the panthers I think and I think against the Jags we do well and of course the Texans.
