Hey, Look: Dan Snyder Finally Gets It
By Chris Mottram | March 3, 2009
It only took a decade, but perhaps the signing of Albert Haynesworth is a sign that Dan Snyder finally understands you don’t build a winner by acquiring guys who are over the hill. He said as much to USA Today:
“We’ve learned our lesson,” Snyder said. “This is not the old ways at all. This is what I should have done a long time ago. He’s a very young man.
“I’ve learned that you don’t do a seven-year contract with a player that’s 33. You do it when he’s 27. That’s the big difference.”
It’s amazing that it took 10 years for him to figure that out, but hey, better late than never. It’s not like he’s ever had a competent GM around to tell him otherwise.
RELATED: Jobless and Less’ take on the Skins’ spending spree. Two quick points: 1) The firing of Johnny or Jane in accounting has nothing whatsoever to do with the signing of free agent football players to large contracts; 2) I’m yet to be laid off (/knocks on wood), but if I was, I’m fairly certain I would in no way be offended by my team signing the best players available to large sums of money.

So he learned that young players > old players. Great. When will he learn that less money > more money and draft picks > no draft picks?

Haynesworth = 21st century Dana Stubblefield

Jamie: Hopefully he’ll learn those things when he figures out no Vinny > Vinny.

Jamie, since it took him 10 years to figure out that young players > old players, the franchise should begin to head in the right direction by the year 2029 once he learns the two other concepts. We just have to have patience.
