  • DMV: Okay, We Get It; Jim Bowden Can Go and Get F#cked

    By Jamie Mottram | July 2, 2009

elijahs-prayer.jpgWith Nyjer Morgan taking over in center, the slumping Elijah Dukes is sent to Triple-A for playing time and further development, which sounds familiar. Now, just 76 games (and only 22 wins) after his departure, two-thirds of Bowden’s outfield of the future and closer of the present are gone. [Nats Journal]

Ten Questions With New WaPo Redskins Beat Reporter Rick Maese

    By Jamie Mottram | July 1, 2009

Earlier this year, NFL Network reporter Adam Schefter left for ESPN. Taking his place at the NFL was Washington Post Redskins beat reporter Jason La Canfora. And taking La Canfora’s place at the Post is ex-Baltimore Sun sports columnist Rick Maese, who starts his new job later this month.

    rick-maese-and-oj.jpg

    1. Welcome to D.C. Have you picked out a neighborhood yet?

We were walking around D.C. this weekend, checking out some neighborhoods, and I thought back to my first apartment. It was in Albuquerque, N.M. — where I was born and raised — and cost $380 a month for about 1,000 square feet. So ideally, we’d like to find something like that. In a good neighborhood, if possible. Fortunately, we don’t live too far away right now, so we can take our time a bit.

Supposedly, my predecessor in this gig drove something like 80 miles one-way to get to Redskins Park. Not sure I can do that. Right now we’re leaning toward the Hill. I heard Ashburn has a Ruby Tuesday, though, so we can’t rule it out entirely.

    2. Before getting to the Post (and your predecessor), let’s look back to the Sun. You and David Steele were laid off via phone while covering an O’s game. Steele sounded off, but you’ve remained quiet. Care to comment?

DMV: Biggest Comeback in O’s History

    By Jamie Mottram | July 1, 2009

After being down 10-1 against the Red Sox, the O’s score five runs in the seventh and eighth to win 11-10. It was the biggest comeback in the history of the franchise. And it was capped off with a two-run double from Markakis against Jonathon Papelbon, who likely didn’t do his infamous jerkoff fist pump afterward. [Baltimore Sun]

BLOCKBUSTER ALERT: Lastings Traded For Nyjer in Historic Nameswap

    By Chris Mottram | June 30, 2009

Perhaps the two most disappointing players during the Nats ‘09 campaign of failure have been shipped outta town. The Nats dealt OF Lastings Milledge and RP Joel Hanrahan to Pittsburgh (aside: whoretown) for OF Nyjer Morgan and RP Sean Burnett today.

Basically, here’s the short overview of the deal: The Nats trade two players with great potential, but have thus far produced shitty results for two players with marginal potential who have thus far produced marginal results. Like I said, blockbuster.

If nothing else, we can stop staying awake at night wondering when Lastings is going to finally become the 20+ HR/.850 OPS player we thought we’d acquired back in ‘07 while simultaneously having nightmares of Hanrahan running from the bullpen to close out a 3-2 lead in the ninth. Yes, you can have nightmares while you’re awake — the Nats are just that horrifying.

    DMV: Baltimore’s Stealth ROY Candidate

    By Jamie Mottram | June 30, 2009

We did this with Guthrie in ‘07 and Lannan in ‘08, so we might as well with Bergesen in ‘09. He’s been the O’s best starter (5-2 with a 3.76 ERA and 1.22 WHIP) and his past month has been phenomenal (4-0 with a 2.23). Plus, he rocks the flat brim and has the stuff to stick around. So Bergesen for AL Rookie of the Year it is, and, should he falter, there’s Nolan Reimold and Matt Wieters to fall back on. [Krem’s Sports Blog]

Wiz Pictorial: ‘Shaking the Hand of Stern’

    By Jamie Mottram | June 26, 2009

Since we were robbed of seeing Ricky Rubio don an awful-looking Wizards hat, walk across the stage and take the hand of Commissioner Stern in a firm grip, here’s looking at players past who have had the honor. And, you know, the longer you look at actual Wizards draft picks (this includes every first-rounder of the post-Bullets era, by the way), the more comfortable you get with the idea of them being traded away.

1999, No. 7 overall: Rip Hamilton (traded to Detroit for Jerry Stackhouse)

    DMV: The Wiz’ Second-Round Heartbreak

    By Jamie Mottram | June 26, 2009

dejuan-smiles.jpgDMV is a daily roundup of District-Maryland-Virginia (mostly) sporting links.

A wonderful thing happened last night. The draft’s best rebounder, DeJaun Blair, fell to No. 32, where the Wizards were waiting. Hopes soared with thoughts of Blair, who out-rebounds entire teams, bolstering Washington’s meager frontcourt. Then a terrible thing happened. The Wiz drafted a guard and traded him for cash. Of course they did. And the well-oiled Spurs got Blair five picks later. Of course they did. [Outlet]

“I am so deflated by the Wizards … They needed Blair’s rear” [@danshanoff]
