Living in the South Sucks Sometimes
By Chris Mottram | December 18, 2008
Prepare to not give a shit about any of what follows, unless you also live outside of the D.C.-area. In which case, you can probably relate …
I can’t get DirecTV in my apartment here in Charlotte because I don’t have a balcony. I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, probably because nothing is more detrimental to my overall happiness. So, for almost every single Skins game, I have to go to a bar. Oh boo-fucking-hoo, you have to go get drunk at a bar and watch football … try being married. Good point, that last bit is, but when was the last time you got drunk on a Sunday? If you’re over the age of about 23 and employed, it fucking sucks. Yet, being the lush that I am, if I go to the bar, I must drink beer. I have no choice.
But on the rare occasion that I get to watch from home, I stay sober and get bent on delicious appetizers. It’s a great experience, mostly because I don’t have some asshole next to me smoking all game, yelling every time one of his fantasy players touches the ball and telling me that the Skins need a QB.
So, with the game being moved to 4:00 this Sunday, and the Panthers playing at 8:00 as to not conflict with the Skins, I thought for sure I’d be enjoying the game in the comfort of my own apartment. But then Atlanta had to drive up I-85 and bend me over by pushing their game back to a late start as well, which means this is happening on Sunday:

You see that red area? Yeah, that area is showing the Skins-Eagles game. And the blue area? Falcons-Vikings. And the red dot with the arrow pointing at it? That’s me, about 45 fucking minutes from being able to see the Skins. Somehow, they’ve concluded that Charlotte gives a flying fuck about the Falcons (which I find amazing considering Atlanta doesn’t even give a shit about the Falcons), yet Troy, North Carolina would rather see the Redskins. I’m fairly certain these viewing maps are created by handing monkeys handfuls of blue and red paint and allowing them to fling it at a map.
I’ve never been so pissed off to live in a blue state.

Wouldn’t the Charlotte market want to see the game involving the other team in their division?
When the Skins are not on channel 5, wouldn’t they most likely to show a game involving the Giants/Pokes/Iggles?

Charlotte also has an enormous population of Redskins fans as this entire area was Burgundy and Gold before the Panthers came to town.
Also, they’re supposed to be the “Carolina” Panthers. Therefore, wouldn’t your argument hold true for the entire state, not just Charlotte? Yet, about 1/4 of the state is showing the Skins game.

If i’m going to watch my team shit the bed, I definitely want to watch from the comfort of my home. Definitely don’t want some chain smoking drunk telling me all game about how JC sucks, Portis isn’t a leader and that was a great trade getting Jason Taylor.
December 18th, 2008 at 1:36 PM
that sucks man…
Jason Taylor interviewed by the Junkies this morning talking about how he doesn’t fit in the system and how he feels he hasn’t earned his $8m (or whatever) salary for next season so he doesn’t think he’ll be back

get a slingbox
December 18th, 2008 at 2:25 PM
And where would I hook up the slingbox if I don’t get the game in my apartment?

Add to that being hit on by creepy douchebags, and I totally agree. I only watch Colts games at the one bar I know has both great TVs and a very small crowd on Sundays.

Creepy douchebags hit on me all the time. They tell me I “have a pretty mouth,” whatever that means.

Going to school in PA, I have faced the same problem, but only for a few games…
My solution?
Justin.tv
You’ve probably heard of it, but if not, its free sports games (Capitals, Wizards, Skins, whatever) and usually has pretty good quality.

Looks like you better quit yer’ yappin’ and hit the road towards that Greensboro Steak-N-Shake.

According to that map, Wilmington is just over yonder, and we’ve got Sunday Ticket over there.

Try being stuck in DC with the plethora of ignorant ’skins fans and wanting to see some good football like my beloved Panthers.
December 18th, 2008 at 6:21 PM
I think my whole point is that I wish I was stuck in D.C. Unfortunately, Sporting News is based in Charlotte.
December 18th, 2008 at 6:49 PM
This isn’t surprising. You should come back to the DC area.

Chris,
Move and get NFL Sunday ticket. It’s totally worth it. Moving that is.
December 18th, 2008 at 7:47 PM
I move outta this apartment in one month to a house where I’ll be able to get Sunday Ticket … next season. That was poor planning on my part.

I live outside Philly and my apartment complex makes it impossible to get DirectTV. I was supposed to get Skins-Bungles this past weekend, but they switched to Falcons-Suckaneers at last minute. I usually can see about half the games at home, and the place I go to watch games is fairly low key, but sometimes the waitress keeps pushing you to buy stuff when the place is nearly empty and you’ve told them you want to watch game.
At least the college football and hoops pay per view packages are available thru cable, so I can see my Twerps play their way to Boise and the NIT.
And the Caps are playing the Flyers on Saturday, so I have to deal with the stunning awfulness of the Flyers TV crew.

At least the girls are better looking down there!
