Wait, the Redskins Had an Actual Mascot?

    By Jamie Mottram | November 19, 2008

With all this talk about Washington gaming the Pro Bowl system, I went to Getty Images hoping to find a sweet pic of Joe Jacoby in a hula skirt. Or something. What I stumbled upon, however, is totally perplexing:

Yipes. The caption on the photo, please:

HONOLULU, HI - FEBRUARY 5: The Washington Redskins mascot stands on the sidelines during the 1995 NFL Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium on February 5, 1995 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The AFC defeated the NFC 41-13. (Photo by George Rose/Getty Images)

I didn’t know they had a mascot, let alone one with a mohawk, haunting visage and actual “red” skin. Chief Zee and the Hogettes, sure, but those are unoffical mascots. This seems NFL-sanctioned and Skins-approved.

Web searches for “Redskins mascot” and “Redskins official mascot” come up empty, so I turn to you for help. What’s happening here? And is this one more, um, feather in the cap for dropping the team name?

Update: Still no answers, though NESW Sports sends another odd mascot from the ‘95 Pro Bowl, so maybe this was just a one-time thing.

I have honestly never seen that… thing… anywhere, in more than 20 years of avidly following the team. That said, it’s long past time to put the team name issue to rest by changing the logo to a starchy, delicious Redskin potato.

Instead of the Hogs, the Spuds. An all-out blitz? Loaded ‘Skins. Heck, bring back “Chip” Lohmiller for Special Teams coach.

Leave it to mjd to get an interview with him.

@twoeightnine, that interview is hilarious and was “conducted” just after I left AOL, hence me missing it completely. Thanks for the link.

Still, like NTPNate, I’ve followed this team for over 20 years and never seen that thing before.

      Steinz! Terl! Story, please.

I wonder which is the greater indignity to natives, this mascot or all the girls named Dakota?

This has to be some kind of South Park-themed joke.

Girls named Dakota probably don’t know the meaning of the word indignity. They’re too busy taking off their clothes for money.

I think his name was Scalpum or Engine Joe.

I was in college in the midwest in ‘95, but I still kind of think I would have known if they had a mascot. That’s completely bizarre.

And that interview is unbelievably funny. Especially the Browns one.

      This is an unbelievable find.

      The “interview” is also hilarious.

how quickly can we bury this picture? This is how teams go from the Bullets to the Wizards. If this gets out we’ll be the Washington “Jam” before you know it.
