Of Course the Skins Want DeAngelo Hall — UPDATE: It’s a Done Deal
By Chris Mottram | November 7, 2008
The second Oakland cut DeAngelo Hall this week, we should’ve known this was inevitable:
The Washington Redskins are among the teams free agent cornerback DeAngelo Hall is considering after clearing waivers Thursday, according to his agent, Joe Segal. Segal would not comment on how many teams are pursuing Hall, or specifics of offers, but said that Hall, a former Virginia Tech star, is intrigued by the possibility of signing with Washington.
“Obviously, the Redskins are a strong franchise and a winning team, and that’s a significant criteria for DeAngelo,” Segal said. “We’re considering all the options and taking it one day at a time.”
As Chase points out, the Redskins meet “significant criteria” for Hall because they have money. Lots of it. And they love giving too much of it to guys like DeAngelo, although ideally for Cerrato and Co., he’d be about eight years older. DeAngelo wishes to get money, get paid.
Having said that, if we can sign the guy short-term and on the cheap (you know, as opposed to the Raiders seven-year, $70 mill deal), then maybe I might, sorta, possibly be open to the idea. He still has skillz that could be useful to our pussy-laden secondary, but on the other hand, there’s always the chance he’ll incur 67 yards worth of penalties on one drive.
In conclusion, I’m leaning towards bad idea on this one, but could be convinced otherwise. The man’s a headcase, sure, but he’s no Pacman Jones or somebody.
/adding nothing to the conversation.
UPDATE: Via commenter BluCollar, the Skins have signed Hall. There are no details on the contract yet.
UPDATE II: La Canfora says it’s a one-year deal. No word on the salary yet, but I’m assuming (see: really, really hoping) it’s the league minimum, or something near that.
UPDATE III: Florio has been told by one of his many sources that it is indeed a $1 million deal. Seven games (plus a few more, hopefully) for one mill? I think I’m cool with this.

“A winning team” is interesting “criteria” for someone who just signed with Oakland.

Is the locker room big enough for both Hall and Smooth’s mouths?

How old is D. Hall?

He’s still really young … gonna be 25 in two weeks.

You know, the Redskins have been needing someone who is in Michael Vick’s corner.

Hall is an assclown but if we can get him for the veteran minimum for the rest of the season, I hope they pull the trigger.

Vinny said on his radio show that the Skins are interested, but only at “minimal salary”.
So if the guy gets in here and he’s an ass, cut him, if he can’t fit into what Blache wants to do, cut him.
But, he would be a big upgrade on punt returns, and not bad depth at corner. So, if he’s cheap (like Vinny said was the only way he would do it), then why not?

Hell, I’ll take him for a 7-game rental this year as long as it isn’t more than $1 mil or so. Give him an extension if he actually pans out, cut his ass if he doesn’t.

Done, one year deal:

It better be for minimum, or damn close to it.

Florio is reporting it’s 1 mil, with an agreement that the Skins won’t use the Franchise tag next year.

Here’s what Pro Football Prospectus 2008 says about Hall: “good player who many people (including Hall himself) mistakenly think is a great player” … “not particularly big, but he’s not averse to hitting people” … “coverage skills are overrated, but his speed most certainly is not.”

His punt return skills could well be the biggest thing we get from this guy.
Also, the 1Mil will be prorated, so he won’t even get the whole 1Mil.

If for $562,500, it means 1) Moss doesn’t have to return punts and risk injury, 2) ARE doesn’t run backwards or spin himself into the ground, and 3) Springs can play some safety and let Horton and LaRon attack the line, then I’m OK with it.

DeAngelo sucks. He can’t defend worth a sh1t and he gets burned more than any other corner in the league.
I was talking to a former GM today about another topic, and when I asked him about Hall, here’s what he had to say (conversation took place shortly before the deal): “Wherever he ends up, he will destroy the team.”
Enjoy.

Florio? is that you?

To Halls defense, he played in a zone coverage scheme while in Atlanta and had some real good years before his last one there. While in Oakland, they only play man to man coverage and he was suspect at best (48 tackles / 3 ints / got burnt alot). But maybe on a good team with solid vet leadership, and a good pash rush this will work out. Plus for $562k we get a 7 game tryout, I will take that over signing someone as a FA to huge money and then cutting him the following year (Archuleta). If he plays well then we should sign him to replace Springs at corner and then move Springs to a safety spot as a reserve.

I don’t like it. Just don’t like douchebags on my team. Hope I’m wrong and he behaves himself. Got a bad feeling about this.

Vinny Cerrato makes my head hurt.
Dont the Skins run man coverage most of the time too?
