Obama, Jackie Robinson and Progress
By Jamie Mottram | November 5, 2008
“By applauding Robinson, a man did not feel that he was taking a stand on school integration, or on open housing. But for an instant he had accepted Robinson simply as a hometown ball player. To disregard color, even for an instant, is to step away from the old prejudices, the old hatred. That is not a path on which many double back.” — Roger Kahn, ‘The Boys of Summer’
Update(s): We’ll be sharing Obama-ness all day long …

Man, you just don’t know.
As great as this is for the country at large, my only wish is that for a couple of seconds, everyone could feel the internal experience of being black.
Just so the high could be a little higher today.

Virginia is a blue state. I live in a fucking blue state!!! Today is a great day to be an American.

I was at the rally in Manassas on Monday night and it was amazing. And where I live in Dupont, the celebrations in the streets were going strong until almost 3:00 a.m. this morning. Both my home states – Indiana and Virginia – went for Obama. I can’t stop smiling like an idiot.

It does feel good that both of our states — VA and NC (although not officially called for Obama yet) — went blue. And the two counties I call home — Fairfax and Mecklenburg — were over 60% pro-Obama.

Downtown DC was electric last night and it was like a sports title celebration, minus the drunken violence. I was at the White House at 2 am and it was truly a surreal experience. I watched thousands of people from all ages and color together in joyous unison. Dudes, it was sick.

Obama to me is like Tony Banks. I didnt want him here, but now that he is, he has my 100% support.

Mac: It probably wasn’t as gnarly as the Obama party I held for myself in my apartment. Bottle of wine, celebratory shots … the works. IN-SANE!

Celebratory shots of wine? You’re hardcore.

Mayor, are you sure this guy isn’t Tony Banks?

No, 289. Celebratory shots of some of the MOST MANLY LIQUOR EVER. And by that, I mean Stoli left in my freezer by my lady friend.
So to summarize: I drank a bottle of wine and took shots of Stoli vodka last night. By myself. I am hardcore.

Yeah, goskins-nc, I live downtown but watch the Skins at home, so I’m of no use when it comes to the NFL Sunday bar scene. Though I have heard Hell’s Kitchen is nice.
And, please, don’t use that F-word here. Or anywhere else, really.

I was walking home from a party in Brooklyn when it became official. I wish I could explain the scene with words but only youtube will do. This was the scene at every street corner for the 2 mile walk. Throw in some random drum circles, bottle rockets exploding over your head, and you’ve got the 360 view.

It was quite moving.

Glad MD went Blue, even though I unfortunately live in the rural Red-state part (where 40% for Obama seems like a moral victory on some level). At least our Congressman is apparently going to be a Democrat.
