Please Take Wilbon’s Column Away
By Jamie Mottram | November 4, 2008
We’re tired of reading about the Steelers fans at FedEx Field last night and hardly ever read Michael Wilbon’s columns anymore, so I would’ve missed this had it not been for the Bog. To quote Wilbon:
“Leftwich might have thought he was playing in Pittsburgh, since between 15,000 to 20,000 Steelers fans snapped up tickets and promptly took over FedEx Field in their black road jerseys. It really gets a little tiresome hearing how great Redskins fans are, only to see fans of the Cowboys or Steelers or Eagles commandeer FedEx Field. Really, they’re a very average lot, at best.“
Let us count the ways in which this is a fucked-up statement:
1. Using his numbers, there were still 70,000-75,000 Redskins fans there; a number that fills most NFL stadiums.
2. Because Pittsburgh was amazing in the ’70s and has won five Super Bowls, they have fans everywhere. To wit, a pregame polling map on ESPN showed that, despite the Redskins being favored, 47 out of 50 states picked the Steelers to win.
3. Steelers fans travel well, and D.C. is four hours from Pittsburgh.
4. Generally speaking, people relocate to D.C. from Pittsburgh, not the other way around. This, in concert with item No. 2, is why there are Steelers bars in the District. Plus, this was the first Steelers game in Washington since 1988.
5. The Redskins have the biggest stadium in the league, one that always sells out even though it sucks, and the team makes more money than any other despite not being consistently good since the early ’90s. It’s accurate to rank the Skins’ fanbase behind those of Dallas and Pittsburgh, sure, but to say it’s middle-of-the-pack is absurd.
6. This wouldn’t even be an issue had the Skins won or made it close.
So, in summation, “Really, [Wilbon is] a very average [writer], at best.”

Not to mention the longest running sell-out streak in the NFL, and a season ticket wait list that won’t expire before I’m dead.

People who aren’t from here and are transplants, as Wilbon is, never seem to grasp the fact that a very large portion of this town is made up of people from other areas of the country. If you are interested/want to work in politics, you move here. There will always be a lot of fans at DC sporting events from other cities b/c that’s who’s here and can AFFORD to go to games.

It was the first Steelers regular season game in Washington since 1988, but as I recall, the Steelers (along with their annoying fans) were in town for a preseason game in the past year or two.

It would actually make even more sense for Pitt fans to be at a preseason game. No one gives a shit about preseason, unless you’re a Steeler fan living in D.C. and it might be your one chance to see your team.

7. The Steelers’ black jersey is their home uniform, Wilbon.

How about his treatment of the Sean Taylor tragedy? I put him on hardcore ignore a long time ago. I’m sick of hearing people in other parts of the country say he’s good on PTI. This guy is the joke of jokes. FUCK WILBON. And fuck Kornholer for that matter. I get it. You’re old. MNF (makes?) keeps you up late. You don’t like it. Quit already. I can’t believe I’m saying this but he’s making me miss old fractured-leg in the booth.

I agree re: Pittsburgh fans at a preseason game. The only reason I was at that shitfest myself was because I couldn’t even give my tickets away, I didn’t want them to go unused, and I didn’t want to sell them to a Steelers fan.

Chris, when you said, ” longest running sell-out streak in the NFL “, were you talking about Wilbon or the Redskins? :-)

If he had replaced the term “Redskins” with “Orioles,” and “Steelers” with any other AL East franchise, this column would have been on the money.

To see all those yellow towels waving around made me sick.
Some Redskin fans are soft and that makes me sick as well.
I can only control me. I was there at 10 am and was drinking Crown from the bottle at 10:01.
I had a close friend and his family hang out close to the DTC tailgate. Not at, but close. We took it easy on him. We only threw is hat in the woods, burned his and his cousins towel and The President punched his uncle in his face.
Across the way, a Steeler fan wanted to fight me because “we wouldnt stop yelling on the bull horn” and because I said his girlfriend had a moustache.
Well guess what pal? This is our motherfucking house and your ugly ass skeet bag of a girl did have a fucking moustache. Infact she looked like Razor Ramon after a 4 day bender.
Alot of people question why the DTC doesnt welcome opposing fans with open arms.
Here is exihibt A your honor.
We cant let opposing fans feel welcome at Fed Ex Field any longer!
I saw Redskin fans asking Steeler fans if they wanted a beer. What the fuck?
Ill give him a beer. In the fashion of a beer bottle across the back of his motherfucking head.
Fuck that shit!
Until Redskin fans take the DTC approach to opposing fans, your going to have games like last night again.
I hate Eagle fans, but you will never see any shit like that at their house, and its the same state!
Im going to create a website for Redskins fans to buy/sell/trade Redskin tickets.
2 rules:
Don’t sell over face value
Don’t sell to non-Redskin fans
That being said, were 6-3 going into the bye and we have the Dallas Cowboys here in 12 days.
Its. About. To. GO DOWN!

I cast my ballot for The Mayor.

“I cast my ballot for The Mayor.”
If the category is “reasons I wouldn’t go to a Redskins game,” me too.
November 5th, 2008 at 12:35 AM
Then by all means, stick to attending hockey/soccer matches where your delicate sensibilities won’t be upset by the likes of The Mayor.

“If the category is “reasons I wouldn’t go to a Redskins game,” me too”
