For Skins Fans Only: Meet the New Guys
By Jamie Mottram | October 15, 2008

Despite my preseason trumpeting of the draft pick, Ray Guy award winner and owner of my lonely heart a 45.3 yard college punting average, it’s with sweet relief that Washington has waived and replaced Durant Brooks just six games into his career. Four new guys (above) tried out at Redskins Park, with ex-Seahawk (read: Zorn-approved) Ryan Plackemeier winning the job, which is troubling considering he was waived by Seattle five weeks ago after a miserable season opener. He also, like Brooks, is a Ray Guy recipient and NFL draft pick (7th round, ‘06).
Plackemeier had a great rookie year, averaging 45 yards per, but bottomed out to 40 last year. And 40 is not good. It’s better than Brooks was doing, but it’s actually worse than tossed-out punter Derrick Frost, who averaged 41 last year and 42.9 the year before that. And that’s fine. It’s Week 6. Who are you going to get? But Washington gave him a two-year deal. The guy didn’t have a job yesterday, and is lucky to have one today … and, oh yeah, for the next two years. I don’t get it.
In other new-guy news, the Skins signed safety Michael Green to replace injured backup Reed Doughty and, yes, former MVP Shaun Alexander to back up Portis and Cartwright in Ladell Betts’ absence. Our grades on that:

Green gets by because he’s Mr. Irrelevant 2000, meaning he’s one of our own. Alexander does not because he was terrible the past two seasons and had already tried out unsuccessfully with Detroit, New Orleans and Cincy. Also, Zorn describes him the way Clark W. Griswold describes Cousin Eddy: “He looks fit.” Preseason star Marcus Mason was the preferred choice.
Regardless, those with keen eyes will notice that these three newest Skins share a common trait, and I’ll leave it up to you to stare at the pictures long enough to notice it.
* Props to Chase for advocating Plackemeier before I’d heard of the guy.

Is it just me, or is Alexander what Skip Hicks should’ve been?
