Maryland Will Win or Lose Against Anyone
By Jamie Mottram | October 1, 2008
The Terps win in Death Valley was almost as good a win as there is in the ACC (Clemson is 28-8 at home over the past five seasons), and victory was theirs despite:
- Being down 11 at the half
- Eight less first downs and 77 fewer total yards
- Scoring only six points off of three turnovers
- Allowing C.J. Spiller and James Davis to run for 224
- Stud RB Da’Rell Scott gaining 1.7 yards/carry
- Star WR Darrius-Heyward Bay catching 0 passes
- QB Chris Turner completing 53% of his passes
I watched this game, and I’m not sure how Maryland won this game, but they did, and they now have the best in-conference (at #20 Clemson) and out-of-conference (#23 Cal)* wins in the ACC this season, yet lost to Middle Tennessee State by 10. It’s maddening, and it goes back to last year when they beat BC (#8) and Rutgers (#10) but were 4-7 otherwise.
In any event, conference play is underway, and it’s anyone’s conference. The Terps take their sparkling 1-0 record to UVA Saturday to play a Cavs team that got waxed by resurgent Duke. After that Maryland plays out the string, with the only two currently-ranked foes being Wake Forest (#25) on 10/18 and Va. Tech (#20) on 11/6. I’m sure they’ll find a way to win one of those, yet lose to a UVA.
Anything could happen, as it usually does, but this we know: Maryland is 4-1 through five, and I’ll take that.
* Apologies to NC State over East Carolina, Va. Tech over Nebraska and Duke over JMU. Yes, the ACC is really that bad.

Wake lost to Navy. I think the Terps can take them.

So does this mean Duke-Maryland will finally take its place among the most heated football rivalries?

The real question is can JMU take UVA?

Ive been listening to ‘Round and Round’ for the past 4 days.
Again I ask, is there a quarterback who has taken down the number of ranked teams Chris Turner has, and still has a loss to the likes of a Middle Tennessee State on his resume? Two top tens and three top 25s now?
Go Terps.
