Jason Taylor Could’ve, Like, Died, Maaan

    By Chris Mottram | September 24, 2008

taylor_jason.jpgThe Spy Sourcerer himself, Jason La Canfora, has some more info about the freak injury Jason Taylor suffered during the game on Sunday. It seems that it could’ve been much, much more serious:

[Taylor] was told by doctors that with any further delay “you would be done forever.” Taylor said at the time the surgery was performed he was told he could have lost his foot. Waiting beyond that could have produced even more dire results.

The injury, which Jim Zorn described Monday as “compartment syndrome,” could have caused nerve damage and tissue necropsy and, if untreated, even death.

“I didn’t want to [have the surgery]. I wanted to wait. I wanted to let God try to heal it up some. Sometimes, I guess you’ve got to help Him out.”

Good thing Taylor didn’t leave this one at the doorstep of Big Baby Jesus. He’d be hopping around heaven on one foot right now, or something.

So I guess the fact that his career could’ve been over almost makes the other bit of news not seem so bad: Taylor could be out for months, not weeks. But based on how tough he’s been both in his career, and with the ‘Skins as he played through that knee sprain, I’m gonna hope that he can be back sooner rather than later. In the meantime, expect the front four to continue to get no pressure on the QB.

Is this the same kind of died like the chicks on Maury saying they almost died in labor?

Cerrato’s totally gonna blame La Canfora for this.

Why am I not a Redskins fan? Cause I said our front four can’t pressure the passer?

Ha ha! YES! No, I was just joking. Seen alot of anger on some Redskins realted posts. I know your a true fan.

I’ll be the first to openly admit that I fucking hate the organization’s front office and PR machine. But I love this team.

    8. The Mayor Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Again, I will point out Vinny has made more productive moves than non productive moves in this organization and now has full say on all moves, so that is the real test now.

We have had alot of good draft picks over the years. Alot of good FA pick ups. Were 2-1 now, playing in the hardest division.

      So far, so good.

    9. Chris Mottram Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

I’d say this year’s draft was damn near a total disaster, actually.

But we are 2-1 in the best division in football. So we can agree on that.

3 games in, we cant judge this draft. 2-3 years, then we revist the 2008 draft.

Lets look at the past drafts.

2007: Laron Landry starts, HB Blades is a good back up LB,and we netted a starter with Heyer (UDA)

2006: Without a 1st round pick, we netted Rocky McIntosh who starts, A.Montgomery who started last year, Reed Doughty who starts, and Cedric Golston who starts this year.

2005: In the 1st we nabbed JC and Rogers, both starters. Thats pretty much it for that draft.

2004: Sean Taylor and Chris Cooley. Pretty fucking good draft there.

The draft is a crap shoot, but as I have listed above, if every year we can get 1 or 2 starters, and a more than average back up, you really can’t complain.

And thats what Vinny has done. Sure the McCunes and Jordan Palmers dont even make the team, but every year we get some good players, and it takes a few years to realize that.

So yes, so far the 2008 draft doesnt look good, but you could have said the same thing about the 2004 draft in 2004.

    12. Chris Mottram Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

I’m basing what I said on this year’s draft on the fact that we spent our first three picks on positions where we didn’t have urgent needs.

If Kelly, Thomas and [insert WR here] end up being the Posse 2.0 in three years, then I’ll take it all back.

    13. BluCollar Redskin Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:06 pm

So Chris, haven’t you complained that “this front office needs to build through the draft”? Well, the best teams/organizations don’t draft according to “urgent need”. They draft the players they consider the best available at that draft position, and create value when possible by accumulating as many picks as they can when appropriate. Isn’t that what the Skins did this year?

So what the fuck are you bitchin’ about?

    14. omgwtfbbq Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

      I like your optimism, Mayor.

However, it should be noted that Snyder & Cerrato campaigned to draft Ted Ginn instead of Landry.

Also, the only reason we didn’t trade as many draft picks as the Bengals would take for Chad Johnson this past April was because the Bengals refused to let him go.

    15. BluCollar Redskin Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

      @omgwtfbbq

I still haven’t seen anybody other than LaConfora with a “source” for that report, most other reports of that particular issue were citing LaConfora. Please post a link if there was something else that confirms that 2 first rounders offer.

And if Snyder and Cerrato were so hot on Ginn, AND THEY CONTROL EVERYTHING AND ARE SO FUCKED UP, why didn’t we draft him? And according to who did they campaign to for him over Landry?

Didn’t the Bengals only say that there was conversation, but no specifics?

    16. The Mayor Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

      @ BBQ

All speculation. Snyder supposedly campaigned for Boldin instaed of Taylor Jacobs.

We can only judge on actual events.

    17. BluCollar Redskin Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Man, listening to all the Cowboys garbage on the air, you’d think we hadn’t beaten the ‘Boys 4 of the last six meetings.

    18. Chris Mottram Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

That’s it: BluCollar is Vinny Cerrato. I’m convinced. We’re honored to have you here. Now get bent.

    19. BluCollar Redskin Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Oh yeah, Chris, like Cerrato and Snyder and Zorn knew Daniels and Buzbee were gonna be injured on the first day of camp.

You still haven’t explained exactly how the draft “sucked”. What would have made it better? Look at this team’s recent history, for the most part it’s been good defense, and shit offense. They attacked that issue in ONE round of the draft. Whether or not it was addressed well won’t be known for a year or two.

And very grown up, “cocksucker”, imaginative too.

    20. The Mayor Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:27 pm

And we did need recievers. Planning for the future here. Moss and Randle El are good as gone as soon as their contracts inflate.

And while DeSean Jackson is doing okay, he is the #1 target, where Thomas is our 4th.

Same thing with all the pundits that came out this week talking about TJ Duckets 2 td’s and B Lloyd having some receptions.

Lloyd here was our #3, he is the #1 with the Bears

Duckett was the #4 back with us, he is number 1 with the Hawks.

Depth Chart order has a big part of how the player produces.

    21. BluCollar Redskin Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

      LOL

Oh, since I don’t agree with your garbage all you can think to do is attack? I must be Vinny? Shit, your a bigger idiot than I thought.

    22. BluCollar Redskin Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

And to further your point Mayor, it is possible that Loyyd got his shit together after getting hammered here for his poor work habits. Even LaConfora, who said over and over again that he liked Loyyd(not the overpaying him part of course, which I agree with) called for him to be cut because he just wasn’t working hard enough around here.

And the Duckett deal was Gibbs thinking he had a team that was on it’s way to the dance, big mistake on his part.

    23. Chris Mottram Says:
      September 24th, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Dude, if you don’t like what we’re writing and you think I’m an idiot, then just fuck off. Seriously, we don’t need your 10 extra pageviews and your 500 word comments as badly as you might think.

Oh I’m not doing it FOR you Chris. I actually enjoy some of what you both write. I was simply pointing out how funny it was that you chose to attack me rather than respond with some type of reasonable thought.

That’s all, it seems you have a problem with me. I simply responded in kind.

I was just hunting for a link I had run across the other day, it was a ‘boys message board where a guy had several quotes from T.O., one where he said he was gonna make up for such little production against the Pack, by layin a bunch of touchdhowns on the Redskins. Damnit, now I can’t find it. I will post if I do.

The Mayor’s right, as always. We must focus our hate on Dallas … and the Junkies. That’s why he’s an elected official. Sorry I said those things to you BluCollar. I take it all back. Except for the part about you actually being Vinny Ceratto. The jury is still out on that.

Ok Second time poster.. (I’ll stop saying that now). But dude seriously f-ed up about Taylors leg, I did not think someone could lose a foot from an incident like that.

Blue Collar, if another person who is part of the old media reported the rumor of 2 1st rounders then odds are they would have called to confirm that statement, its standard for most pro-journalists.

BTW to the Mottram Brothers, I love the 13 jersey on the top of the screen, first time I got a skins jersey with my own name on it I went with 13, so props to you for it.

Zorn seems to already have a solid idea of how important beating Da ‘Boys is, he was extra secretive around practice today, and he did a nice job of avoiding actually answering questions about players with too much information. This is when he really finds out what it’s like to coach in Washington.

I hate when I don’t get to read until it’s too late to make a timely comment, but holy crap is BluCollar wrong about how “good teams/organizations” draft. Of course they draft for urgent needs, that’s how shitty teams become half-way decent. Once those urgent needs start to get filled, then the organization can start to anticipate future needs and draft more toward the best available talent.

Still, as a life-long Colts fan who fully recognizes what Bill Polian has done to build the team, it would be ridiculous to say we don’t still draft for urgent needs sometimes, because it’s quite clear that we have.

    33. BluCollar Redskin Says:
      September 25th, 2008 at 7:02 am

      @smurphette

That’s ridiculous. You really believe that? You need to take a closer look at the draft history of the more successful teams. Of course there are selections made that also fit the teams needs, but that doesn’t mean their draft was dictated by “urgent needs”.

My point was that it’s stupid to draft a particular position just because the team has a need there, there are many factors to be weighed, “urgent need” is no more important than the others.

    34. Chris Mottram Says:
      September 25th, 2008 at 8:11 am

Yes, there are many factors to be weighed, and apparently you are conceding that need is one of them. If that’s the case (and, yes, it is the case), then it makes zero sense to take three receivers with your first three picks when your most glaring need is on the d-line.

If need is a factor and talent is a factor and best available is a factor, you combine those and, say, take Thomas with that first pick and a d-lineman with the second pick. Or vice versa.

You have to attempt to fill holes that you have immediately, especially when you’re already a playoff team. If you’re always building, you’re never winning.

    35. smurphette Says:
      September 25th, 2008 at 10:24 am

I’m just going from what I know, and that’s the Colts, one of the best-run organizations in the NFL. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better President/GM than Bill Polian.

Of course they don’t draft strictly on need, but they definitely don’t draft the “best available athlete” just because. Need always informs their draft picks to a significant degree, it’s just that “urgent need” for the Colts tends to be issues with depth more than starting players now that the team has an excellent foundation. This is bolstered by the fact that the Colts rarely sign big name free agents - they put a high priority on filling holes via the draft.

Still, just last year the Colts traded their first round pick in the 2008 draft to San Francisco in order to move up and draft a left tackle high in the second round. When all-pro LT Tarik Glenn retired that summer, it became pretty clear why they did.

Anthony Gonzalez, their first round pick that year, was clearly drafted to replace Brandon Stokley, who had signed with Denver a month before the draft. Everyone knows how integral the the slot/possession receiver is to the Colts’ offense, and it was a hole they - yes, urgently - needed to fill. It goes without saying that protecting Manning’s blind side would be an urgent priority as well.
