Shocking: D.C. Sports Fans Prefer Watching the Skins Over the Nationals

    By Chris Mottram | September 10, 2008

Holy shit, you’ve got to be kidding me! The Nats hit a new low in TV ratings last Thursday night?! Wait, last Thursday, as in he same night that the Redskins were playing their season opener against the Giants? And people still didn’t flip on the Nats-Braves — two losing teams playing September baseball — instead of watching the Skins? Well, shit, color me just totally fucking shocked:

The September 4 Nationals game pulled a 0.26 rating/6,000 HHs. By comparison, the Redskins-Giants game on NBC pulled a 26 rating/600,000 HHs in the DC market.

I saw this yesterday in SBD’s Closing Bell, sent it to Jamie and we had the same exact reaction: Uh, yeah, that’s not at all surprising.

However, Steinz still felt the need to post about it, which is fine because it’s D.C.-related, but at least he found the fact that it was up against the Skins game noteworthy. Somebody (ahem), on the other hand, decided to totally omit any mention of the season opener and use the shitty Nats rating as another excuse to rail the franchise. I just hope some brave blogger is prepared to mock the Capitals’ ratings the night of February 3rd when the Redskins are playing in Tampa.

(Rule: When in doubt, use a gratuitous cheerleader photo.)

UPDATE: Oh, TBL, for fuck’s sake. TV ratings are low! MOVE THE TEAM! We shall not consider any contributing factors, or do any research whatsoever into the topic. (Why start now?) Blanket statements based on limited info, that’s what we do.

UPDATE II: Well, my bad. ‘Duk pointed out that he was more so mocking the Nats ratings back on Aug. 16, and merely mentioned last Thursday in passing. Hmm … let’s see, Aug. 16th, why would the ratings be bad that night? Ah yes, another Redskins game. Plus, Phelps was swimming.

This can only end in a donnybrook between you and Kaduk, if not Steinz, which is to say it won’t end well.

I have no issues with Steinz’s post, but for ‘Duk to post that without any mention of the clearly obvious reason why the ratings that night were extra low was kinda bush …

That would be me, since I’m a life-long Colts fan. And that definitely doesn’t make me a loser (the opposite, in fact, since we’ve won our division for five straight years and a Super Bowl).

The only point is, obviously they’re gonna be really, really, really low on these days. But 1,600 households? For a Major League Baseball team? Even if WRC was showing live footage of President Bush playing cricket in his underwear against Lindsay Czarniak at RFK, that would still be astoundingly, shockingly low.

And the fact that the average household number has actually DECLINED since the time when it was, by a factor of three, the lowest in baseball, is also remarkable. Doesn’t mean they should be contracted, but golly, it’d be nice if the city could find a way to build a soccer stadium if they found the time to build a baseball team despite such a small base of hardcores.

Dammit! I was this close to mentioning in the post how you like to bring down the Nats in favor of the United.

And, I’m sorry, did you say something about Lindsay Czarkniak and underwear being televised? Yeah, that would definitely do better than any Nats game.

I just re-read what I read. Damn, it’s completely unintelligible.

What I wrote, I meant. Someone help. I need an intervention.

Jamie – I love BP and I promise you that I don’t take him for granted. I remember the pre-Polian era and can definitely sympathize with your current managerial situation.

Hi guys, big fan. Love you two on “Blog Show”…blah, blah, bleeping blah.
I was going to say I agree with you: “When in doubt, CHEERLEADERS!!!”
I won’t go ANYWHERE near that “underwear” line…unless, of course, you can talk Erin Andrews out of HERS!!! RLMMFAO
I’m sorry, what was the topic??
