Countdown to Epic Fail: T-Minus 11
By Chris Mottram | September 10, 2008
With the Nats on the cusp of their first 100-loss season, we will countdown to the momentous occasion here after each loss leading up to the milestone.

At least this one wasn’t a shutout. The Nats actually hit the ball in their 10-8 loss to the Mets last night, but John Lannan and the rest of the staff let them down. We’ll give Lannan’s three inning performance a pass, however, seeing as he’s been the lone bright spot in the rotation this season. Also, the loss helps keep the Mets 2.5 games ahead of the Phillies. One of the two has to win this division, I’d much prefer it be New York.
Epic Failure of the Game: Jim Bowden for trading Luis Ayala. Sure, he wasn’t good with the Nats this season, but that’s because the team clearly was not properly utilizing him. He’s taken over the closer role in NY, and has six saves in 11 outings with 1.00 WHIP. Last night, he closed the door in the ninth on the Nats, 1, 2, 3.

Ray Knight said Delgado’s 3rd-inning HR went 500 feet. Of course, Ray Knight is a boob, but it was a blast nonetheless.

I’d prefer the Phillies, simply because a Mets failure means an Ayala failure.

I’d have to disagree, Chris. I hate the Mets way, way more than I hate the Phils. I don’t want to live in a world where David Wright goes to the playoffs.
