Epic Fail: Maryland Football’s Total Loss
By Jamie Mottram | September 9, 2008
We’re way late on Maryland’s shocking loss to Middle Tennessee State, but I’d skipped it to prepare for Hurricane Tropical Storm Hanna and have been awaiting a report from Terps correspondent Andy Peden, who wipes away the tears to answer four simple questions. Plus, this pic is worth the wait.

1) Is Darrius Heyward-Bey’s “first week of school” excuse the worst you’ve ever heard?
Peden: Pretty much.
2) How do the Middle Tennessee State loss and close opening win over Delaware affect your original 8-win prediction?
Peden: The 14-7 win against Delaware wasn’t a concern because they really controlled that game but just didn’t put any points on the board. Against MTSU the defense couldn’t get a stop on third down and couldn’t get off the field. It’s hard watching a 5’10’’ QB pick your defense apart. (Ed. note: See how he dodged the question there? I’m guessing the prognosis drops at least one game to 7, though five or less seems more likely at this point.)
3) With the worst loss of the Fridge era, how tenuous is the big man’s job security? And is that more or less tenuous than Gary’s?
Peden: Fridge is hurt now by his first three years of success. He is getting better athletes plus the ACC is seemingly weaker, but can’t get back to 10 wins. I think he is OK for a while but a few more 5 or 6-win seasons and he is in real trouble. Gary won a National Championship which pretty much guarantees you a job provided you don’t have NCAA violations and you are over .500 every year.
4) Other thoughts? Rant it out.
Peden: Yeah, did anyone watch that game on Saturday? (Ed note: Again, no.) Two things, first, Comcast has Kelly Holcomb, a MTSU alum, doing the color and he used ‘we’ and ‘us’ every time he was referring to MTSU. I have never heard that before. Second, on the first drive MD went 71 yards on two running plays. Then for some reason tried to establish the pass. Why? Just keeping running until they stop you. I think the coaches out thought themselves. Scott had 11 carries for 123 after getting 71 yards on the first drive. As a team MD only ran the ball 25 times and 12 of those were from Turner and Portis. Stop worrying about the QB situation and run the f’ing ball until someone stops you.

Mr. Peden has informed me that he has lowered his forecast to 6 wins which is about how many ACC game the basketball team will win.

Would be nice if one of those six came on Saturday against Cal, which would almost put the season back on track.

we could have a long day against Cal…..That is if Heyward-Bey goes to class this week

I’d enjoy this a lot more if my team wasn’t sucking it up so bad.
