My Name Is Chris, and I Wear Jerseys

    By Chris Mottram | September 4, 2008

Amongst the other various oddities I’ve encountered during my 10-months living in the south is this: People find it ridiculous that I wear a Redskins jersey while watching Redskins games. I’d previously encountered this point of view once in my life, and it was on the Metro while coming home from a Nats-Phillies game at RFK. Granted, three of my buddies and I were all wearing Skins jerseys to a baseball game just to piss off Eagles fans, so we probably deserved the mocking.

But back the original point: What the hell is wrong with wearing a jersey to, or while watching, an NFL game? At first, I thought this was just another reason to hate college football fans — they seemed to be the ones giving me the most shit. I let it slide, because their gameday garb consists of pistachio pants with tiny embroidered salmon on them, paired with a button up fishing shirt in whatever color of pastel they fancy on that given day. And that’s fine — we come from two different worlds. But then the jersey backlash extended beyond that, and I was hearing from displaced northerners at work.

As you can tell, my NFL gameday fashion aesthetic is being tested big time down here. So, while I’m busy decided between my Portis, Campbell or Doug Williams Grambing jersey for tonight’s big game, let’s take it to the streets, poll style! Vote or die, brahs.

Of course it’s OK to wear a Redskins jersey during the game.

Infact its OK to wear any form of Redskins gear anytime, and any place.

Keep your pimp hand strong down there sports fan!

For Redskins games, jerseys are an acceptable substitute if the clown suit is at the cleaners.

I have some jerseys and I have worn them to sporting events, however it is a bit weird/ambiguous to wear another man’s name across the top of your back, while doing fist pumps and yelling his name.

Where the F*** else are you supposed to wear a jersey!? Those people don’t know what they’re talking about…

Damn right its OK to wear one. I went out at lunch today and bought a burgundy #47 Chris Cooley special. Now I’m ready for the season to begin.

Are you really concerned with what a bunch of porkchops in ties think? Remember, they wear f’ing ties to football games? In case you didn’t hear me, THEY WEAR F’ING TIES TO FOOTBALL GAMES! I mean, its football which is best played in cold, wet and nasty conditions. And they are wearing ties!! F THEM

      Very nice choice, Mayor.

And despite butting heads earlier, I’m sure after a bottle of crown, we’d get along.

Wearing a football jersey is silly and childish, which is why I do it for every Redskins game.

My gameday jersey habit is beyond reproach.

Since his death I’ve work Sean Taylor’s jersey every gameday, but in the past I went with the Doug Williams Mitchell and Ness.

After LaVar, Smoot pt. 1, and the disaster that was the Spurrier jersey I decided I had to go with somebody who could never let me down.

Christopher, not all college fans dress like assholes to football games. There are definitely no pastels or ties at Notre Dame Stadium. That nonsense is pretty much confined to UVA and the SEC.

I wear my Bob Sanders jersey during Colts games. Jerseys are fine.

While I’ve made fun of dudes for just wearing jerseys while strolling around wherever they stroll, I’ve never thought twice about jersey wearing etiquette while watching or attending a game….I’ve got the vintage Art Monk ready to roll tonight by the way.

Football happens when grown men wear tight pants and get paid millions of dollars to play a game made up to entertain children, yes?

I think anyone that tells you it is uncool to wear a jersey is taking it a bit too seriously…

@ GPF: If you are a Redskins fan, no question we will get along

@ everyone wearing a Redskins jersey last night. Take it off the floor (or in my case, the pieces scattered around the bar) and fucking burn it. Do not wear that jersey AGAIN.

Seriously though, the Giants lost their first game last season and went on to win the Superbowl.

Who are these idiots? My only issue is fans that wear jerseys of teams to games when their team is not actually playing in the game.

Thanks for bringing up a touchy subject because the only jersey that I worn for 10 plus years is my Packers Favre jersey. (UGH, SIGH, FUK You Ted Thompson) Whew, much better.

I generally wear a jersey to games as it is often the most convenient way to dress in team colors. I don’t understand the fans in jerseys of teams that are not even playing that day, anywhere.
