Melvin Mora Is Suddenly an RBI Machine

    By Jamie Mottram | August 17, 2008

mora-trembley-hug-it-out.jpgI’ve said not-so-nice things about Melvin Mora over the past year — he stinks, he’s not any damn good, he’s awfully indignant, etc. — but now he’s making me eat my feedback:

“A funny thing has happened to Mora since the [All-Star] break - he’s hitting like a star. He put up a tasty 4-2-3-4 line at Detroit Friday, with a homer, and catch what he’s done over his last 26 games: .404 [batting average]/.432 [on-base percentage]/.706 [slugging percentage], seven homers, 37 RBIs.”

That was written on Saturday morning, and since then all Mora’s done is collect seven hits in two games and record two HR with six RBI in Sunday’s slugfest at Detroit. He’s now driven in 91 on the year, good for fourth in the AL and incredible for a 36 year-old who couldn’t hit water the first three months of the season and was below average the past two years.

His is but one seat on the mellow magic carpet ride that is the 2008 Orioles. Thanks largely to Aubrey Huff’s return to peak form, the continued development of Nick Markakis, Brian Roberts’ usual All-Star production, the quiet efficiency of Luke Scott and Mora’s aforementioned reemergence, Baltimore scored has the 4th-most runs in Major League Baseball. Not bad for a lineup that had Kevin Millar hitting cleanup on Opening Day.

The O’s have even avoided their annual June-September swoon, and if they notch 20 victories in their remaining 39 games they’ll win 80 on the season for the first time since ‘97. You know, back when Baltimore and its sluggers were good for entire years rather than just months at a time.
