Nationals Still Doing Their Best to Be Historically Horrible
By Chris Mottram | August 14, 2008
We meant to address Walk-Off Walk’s post on Monday about the team chasing the record for being shutout the most in one season, but didn’t find time. Luckily for us, it didn’t take long for them to go scoreless yet again. Last night, they lost 12-0 to notch their 18th scoreless game. This puts them 12 shy of the record, with 41 games left. Unfortunately, they’re on pace to fall just shy of their historically shitty goal (from Baseball Prospectus, via WoW):
If the Nats continue getting shut down at their current pace, they will finish with 24 whitewashings, which would be tied for the fourth highest team total since 1956. The record in the last 50 years is held by the 1963 Mets, who were blanked 30 times in their second year of existence.
Now, granted, that was written after their 17th shutout last Sunday, so I’m not sure how last night’s “whitewashing” alters their pace (I’m really bad at math). What I do know is that if they can go scoreless one out of every three games for the remainder of the season, they’ll break the ‘63 Mets’ record. I have faith that they can pull it off. At the very least, they better get to that 100-loss mark. They’re 23 shy of that, so their current winning percentage of 34% suggests that they’ll easily crack triple digits in the loss column. If we couldn’t laugh, we’d cry.

Was at the game last night. Pathetic beyond words, though the 85% of the stadium that were Mets fans seemed to be enjoying themselves.

C’mon, it was more like 30% or less Mets fans at the beginning of the game. I’m proud to say that a group of us booed and harrassed some drunk middle aged woman with an ill fitting Mets t-shirt into screaming something incomprehensible at us about Screech being half the man that Mr. Met is.

I was there last night. I have been to 9 games this year and seen all of 1 win. I have seen to shutout, though. So at least I have that going for me.
Mets fans are almost as annoying at Phily fans. Almost.

I still drunk from last night. I meant to say 2 shutouts.

Two goals for the rest of the season, in no particular order.
1. Tank the rest of the season so they get #1 pick Stephen Strasburg (hopefully the Lerners would pony up the cash to sign him). Seattle is still too close for comfort in the battle for worst-place.
2) Don’t get anybody killed.

All New York sports fans are fucking unbearable to be around.
As for the Nats: Sigh. Although they won 6 of the 11 games I’ve been to this year (including 3 walk-offs), I am dying for football to start.

I guess it must suck when you have people rooting for the visiting team in your own stadium
