Zorn Talks Dirty, D. Thomas Talks Stupid

    By Jamie Mottram | August 7, 2008

I first read this quote without context on Deadspin yesterday:

“My hope is that the younger guys like Malcolm and Devin will actually hang around and just sort of rub up right against” Thrash, Zorn said, “and then all that stuff will just ooze onto them, because he brings a lot to the table.”

Hilarious and Zorn Star-rific, sure, but I didn’t read the actual story until seeing it again this morning on The Player Hater’s Ball. It was then I realized Zorn was talking about Redskins 2nd-round rookie wideouts Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas showing up to camp out of shape, which may or may not have led to minor injuries that have put them behind on learning the West Coast offense. Thomas, however, is not trying to hear that:

“As far as making an impact from the get-go, I don’t look at that as a difficult thing to do.”

Given context, that’s as misguidedly sad as Zorn’s quote was unintentionally funny. We called it “very odd” that the Skins would take three receivers on the first day of the draft, and now James Thrash is still the third wideout after Thalia and Melpomene. While he seems like a wonderful, hardworking guy, Thrash is also 33 and hasn’t caught 20 passes in a season since 2003.

For as good as many of the other rookies looked in the preseason opener, this doesn’t bode well for the first draft class authored by Vinny Cerrato. But hey, at least he didn’t trade for Favre! Baby steps, people. Baby steps.

Is it just plain stupid to have any faith in the management of this organization to accomplish anything other than concocting new ways of making money?

Zorn also had a great quote on Joe Bugel during training camp – “He really kind of just walks around, and you just want to be around him because he likes to get it on.”

(saw it on comcast about a month ago and found the transcript at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/25/AR2008072503145.html)

I think somewhere someone should start compiling these b/c I have a feeling there is much more to come.
