Scott Van Pelt Is Curious About This Guy

    By Jamie Mottram | August 6, 2008

chris-waters-brim.jpgLast night Chris Waters had the finest Major League debut for an O’s pitcher since Bob Milacki 20 years ago, prompting Scott Van Pelt to sign off SportsCenter with something to the effect of:

“Orioles fans have got to be asking, ‘Where’s this guy been all year?’”

In case O’s fans are actually asking that, the answer is AAA Norfolk, stinkin’ it up with a 5.70 ERA in 18 games (16 of them starts). Before that he tore it up at AA Bowie (1.69 ERA in six starts), but that brief run came on the heels of a 4.49 ERA in 27 starts at Bowie last year. Basically, there’s a reason why he made his debut at the relatively old age of 27: He’s not very good.

Which is all the more reason to celebrate his remarkable night and root for him to continue being Birdland. A sparkling performance in the Show after nine years in the minors is a special thing. Plus, Bob freaking Milacki!

Other O’s news: Sleepy Jones has a broken foot, probably from kicking so much ass the past couple of months. He may shut it down for the season, but at least he’s proven to be Baltimore’s CFer of the future.

Well, I am going to the game today, and checking the game preview I realized that I had no idea who Garrett Olson is (even though he has made 18 starts). California makes you weak. Go Or-e-o’s, hon.

The one time I saw the O’s at Anaheim was a Friday night during the summer of ‘98. Raffy hit his 300th, and my friend and I drove to Vegas afterward. It was the best of times, it was the worst of stadiums.

They might as well call up McNulty.

I turned on the game expecting the Angels to be spanking the Os, only to find it 2-0 in the 7th with some rookie throwing a one hitter. I thought I was high. Luuuuuuuuuuke Scott just crushed a HR too.

This team has 1 1/2 arms on the starting staff and some holes in its lineup but Trembley has a never say die tude in Birdland. I am impressed and they put up 4 in the 9th of Krod! Crazy.

If Angelos opens up the wallet to sign a few stud starters and a power hitting 1b/3b, I might actually remove him off my people that I wish would croak list. That is false but I will move him down a bunch.

Need more pitching. Even though I covet Teixeira, we need more pitching.

Well, the Olson guy I hadn’t heard of got shelled. By the way, if you haven’t experienced a Vlad Guerrero home run, you are missing quite a sonic experience. The one he hit yesterday was the loudest crack of the bat I’ve ever heard - it sounded like a gunshot. Two years ago at a Angels-O’s game, he was up in the bottom of the 9th with 2 men on and down 2, and when I heard the “crack!” I just started packing our things and leaving. Didn’t even need to watch where it landed.

Just think of the might-have-beens if he did sign with the O’s…
