Griffey to the Chisox Is a Beautiful Thing
By Chris Mottram | July 31, 2008

It looks like my October rooting options might not be limited to whoever is playing the Red Sox and/or Yankees. Griffey, after being traded to the White Sox today, will get at least one more chance at a ring — an opportunity he hasn’t had since leading the M’s to the playoffs 11 years ago. With Griffey being my childhood idol, and still someone that I respect above all others, this means I’m forced to be a White Sox fan down the stretch.
This will be more difficult than it sounds. After all, AJ Pierzynski is still on that team and the South Side is for poor people, just ask any Cubs fan, but Junior deserves a ring, dammit, and I wanna see him get one. It would be the next best thing to seeing the O’s or Nationals win a World Series, which might never happen in my lifetime. And I plan on living a long fucking time.
Speaking of the hometown teams on this trade deadline day, they did nothing. Absolutely fucking nothing. (Although there were rumors they tried to deal John Lannan, possibly their best pitching prospect, which would’ve been just perfect.) And why would they? They’re only a combined 32 games back; still plenty of time to make a pennant run. Yeah, better hold on to Aubrey Huff.

Another one of Chris’s childhood idols? Kelly Gruber. Honestly.

C’mon now. Not everyone on the South Side is poor. Barack is from there and everyone knows he’s an elitist.

Is that because he looks like Gruber minus the feathered mullet?

Not true. The Nats picked up disgraced former Attorney General/Yankees farmhand Alberto Gonzalez. So there’s that.

I think I like Gruber because he played thirdbase, like me, and I liked the color blue. Plus, he had a monster season in ‘90, when I was an impressionable eight-year-old. Not coincidentally, I think by ‘92, I had disowned him.

You also collected rocks for a while there, which are probably more valuable than your Gruber collection.

Chris, it appears that we hate all the same baseball players. I started rooting for Michael Barrett literally because he punched Pierzynski in the face in that Sox-Cubs game. I fucking hate that guy.
/childhood idols were Joe Montana and Reggie Miller
