George Sherrill Is an Evil Temptress
By Chris Mottram | June 25, 2008
The O’s did their best to blow a 7-1 lead last night at Wrigley, giving up runs in the 7th and 8th to make it a 7-5 game, but luckily they had George Sherrill to shut the door with authority. You know, after loading the bases to put the winning run on first with no outs in the bottom of the ninth:
Man, that was nerve-wracking. But fear not, Sherrill’s defense has all the confidence in the world in him:
“He’s unbelievable,” said second baseman Brian Roberts, who recorded his 1,000th career hit on Tuesday night. “I’ve never seen anything like it. Our saying is, ‘Never in doubt, Georgie, never in doubt.’ But gosh, I’m starting to doubt. He’s killing me out there. He’s killing all of us. But shoot, it’s fun. I don’t think he ever doubts himself and that’s all that matters.”
Wow, B-Rob, that’s an awfully catchy saying you’ve got there. But whatever works. The team is still above .500 and Sherrill has 26(!) saves. That puts him on pace for, like, 60 or something.

I realized the game was on WGN and could actually watch it in the 7th inning. So, I did not get to enjoy any of the 7-1 lead, I just got to be tortured for 45 minutes. Sherrill’s performance was bizarre — he looked unhittable for the last three batters but mostly incompetent the rest of the inning. It was the first time I had seen him pitch — are all his saves this adventurous?

@Coach
Lately they have been. Up until the Pittsburgh series a couple weeks ago he was completely dominant. Recently, his breaking pitches have been a little off target which makes is fastball that much more hittable. But still, the dudes an effing beast.
