We Are Apparently ‘Edgy Outsiders’
By Chris Mottram | June 23, 2008
The mainsteam media continues to totally get blogging. Yesterday, the L.A. Times published a ridiculous article about some make believe evolution that is occurring in blogging. Apparently, sports bloggers are putting on their big boy britches and moving out of their parent’s basement and into some realm of journalist integrity in this post-Buzz Bissinger gone wild world. This is the first I’d heard of this evolution, probably because it’s not true. Of course, to get the facts, the Times went straight to the source of journalistic bloggers: The Big Lead, which is the US Weekly of sports blogs.
But as ridiculous as all of that is, my favorite part — for selfish reasons, naturally — was the mention of Mr. Irrelevant, along with other sites, as some sort of rebel, underground movement:
Sites such as SportsbyBrooks, Kissing Suzy Kolber, With Leather and Mr. Irrelevant have touted themselves as edgy and independent, outsiders free to write what mainstream media will not. Critics have portrayed them differently: the rabid fan sitting at a computer in his parents’ basement, in his pajamas, spewing opinion.
See, bloggers aren’t the only ones who just make stuff up out of thin air. I will pay David Wharton, the author of this article, my entire lot of Jujubees and pistachios that the Sporting News pays me if he can find one solitary example of us claiming to be “edgy” or “outsiders.”
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to practice riding my skateboard and blogging at the same time. My edgy, anarchist reputation isn’t going to maintain itself here people.
Update: Shanoff keeps it short and sweet. And probably says it better in 20 words than I did in 250.
Update 2: Leitch goes with the “oh, fuck it” approach and appropriately puts TBL on blast.

KSK only touts itself as a humor blog.

It’s totally true. You said fuck once and you can’t say fuck on the internet.

Maj, maybe it was a typo. Perhaps he meant KSK outs itself.
Mottram, if you’re not edgy and outsider-y, then what the hell good are you?

You should rename the blog to Mr. Relevant, since you are obviously, well relevant, even in California.

I consider myself a journalism/blogging hybrid, which makes me loved by no one outside of the Georgetown TCBY.

Like I have said before. It is crazy how anyone can say anything they want about sports blogs now. All of the “experts” have given their opinion and they did not approve.
Now people can just make up anything they want to. No one will say a word to them about it.

Well played on the US Weekly blast as I know there has been some build up on that one. Leitch rocked it.
