Head’s Up Heady Brahs, WaPo Has a New* Mad Sweet Lax Blog
By Chris Mottram | May 23, 2008
As far as I can tell, Lacrosse is a sport for righteous dudes who smoke a lot of pot and aren’t very good at other sports. And American Indians. The former is why all my friends in high school played it. I’ve never understand the interest in lax, like, at all. It basically strips hockey off all its fun and interesting components and combines all of its most boring elements.
But apparently, I’m in the minority on this one because the Washington Post has decided the sport is important enough to warrant its own blog. It’s called The Fastest Blog on 2 Feet — which means absolutely nothing to me and, really, makes no sense — and includes such interesting tidbits as this one, which I lazily stole from the latest post on the site:
Frankly, this argument is as tired as the Duke fifth-year thing. To paraphrase the late author Raymond Chandler, I don’t yell at people who can’t hear me. The NCAA says Duke gets a fifth year. My editor says to use Foxborough. That’s enough for me.
Anyway, there was a barbeque for the participating teams and some media last night at the stadium. Apparently, Bill Belichick spoke at the barbeque and eschewed his normal attire and wore a pink tie.
Duuude, I know! Duke and their fucking five years. Who gets a fifth year? I mean, seriously. Bullshit, man. Fucking bullshit. Pink ties are the balls though, brah.
*By “new” I mean “new to me.” I’ve been told this blog is a couple months old. I’m shocked — shocked! — that I hadn’t already found it in my endless search for new lax blogs.

Lacrosse is such a fun game to actually play. It is a shame that it is so terrible to watch and that a few of the more ‘brahsome’ players ruin the image of everyone else who picks up a stick.
When you are actually on the field has a great balance. Lax is rough enough to gain entrance into the “fun contact sport zone” while simultaneously involving the strategy and finesse that hold your attention for years as a player.
Take it from me, lacrosse is really, really fun to play.
With that said, I have first cousins that play D-1 lacrosse at very competitive schools and I haven’t seen any of their games. Granted, that is because I am a huge asshole, but I also just graduated from a the University of Maryland (which has a great laxball team) and I probably attended less than 5 games throughout my college career.
That’s the thing. Lacrosse doesn’t have enough of a fanbase to be a good spectator sport. All of the interesting intricacies of the sport are nearly impossible to see from any vantage point except the feild.
To make matters worse, in the off chance that a lax game gets put on TV there are never enough cameras to capture the action in an entertaining, meaningful way. Thus, lax remains a boring sport to watch on TV (just like its cousin hockey).
However, unlike hockey, Lacrosse doesn’t have a particularly good live game feel to counterbalance its sucky TV persona. Lacrosse can’t fill the arenas its played in (major college football stadiums) and because of that there is no spectacle at a game. Going to regular season game at a major D-1 school isn’t really much better than seeing a bunch of pee wee kids play the sport.
BTW- that fastest blog on two feet does suck.
